I have a 10M vertical made of 1/2" copper water pipe with a
ground plane of aluminum window screen. It works reasonably
well. One piece of advice is to sweat or otherwise ensure good
contact in all joints that should be connected in the antenna.

Start with 9.4 feet of wire. That should be a bit "long" considering the
loading effect of the support, nearby objects, etc.
Open the radiator at the middle and connect 50 ohm coax. (Yes you can use a
transformer - "balun" - but don't bother.)
Check SWR and shorten the wire until you get the
