There have been several questions about lithium batteries and their use as a
substitute for lead-acid batteries.
The discussion caused me to question my understanding of the definition of a
lithium battery.
The FAA uses the term to cover both lithium metal batteries that are not
rechargeable and lithium ion batteries that are rechargeable. Wikipedia is
neither definitive or even self consistent. It uses lithium battery largely as
meaning lithium metal batteries, but inside the discussion of lithium ion
batteries it refers to such batteries as lithium batteries. In the Wikipedia
case they seem to use the context of the discussion as being important in the
understanding of the use of the term.
My conclusion is that when the discussion pertains to the use of lithium
batteries as a substitute for rechargeable lead acid batteries then it is more
likely that the question pertains to the rechargeable version of the lithium
batteries, i.e. to what is often referred to as lithium ion batteries when the
context does not provide the likely meaning.
For KX3 owners in particular there have been extensive discussions on the best
type of rechargeable batteries depending on their application: backpacking,
beach portable, picnic tables accessible by car, etc. A search of this site,
the yahoo group for the KX3 or other sites for portable hf operation will give
a wide range of options along with their pros and cons.
