Hi all,
last evening I switched on my K3 and got direct "HI SIG" in the display. I
dsconnected all cables but still the same. K3 is not RXing anything anymore.
Strange thing is that the morning I was operating my K3 (serial # 5776) as
normal and switched off after. 4 days before I updated

Ah yes, q8 and it's good friend Q9

Returned K3 to Elecraft and they fixed the "HI SIG" problem by replacing Q8
and Q9 on the RF Board.

Guy, s/n is 6101. Originally invoiced in January 2012, factory-built. Not sure
of pins - how recent were they put in? Last feature upgrades were for 2nd rx
and ATU in late 2012.

Don, yes I disconnected everything but power and ground and still get the
same HI SIG indication. The strange thing is if I quickly cycle power off
and back on again, the error disappears and all functions normally... until
I power it down for awhile and back on.

Do you have *anything* connected to the RX ANT or the unused TX antenna
jack?
The K3 is "thinking" it sees a high RF level on the receive input.
Remove everything from the K3 except the power and see if you still have
the problem. The reconnect each cable one at a time and test again.
Recently after updating firmware I started getting a HI SIG error in the
Display's VFO B position when I power up the K3. I can power down the K3
with the HI SIG error showing, then immediately power it back on, and all
works fine. Tried removing all antennas and 6m preamp, no change. Reloaded
Thanks to Gary Surrency, the Hi Sig displays at last disappeared and the
rig works normally.
Gary said the KPIO3 could be the cause of the trouble. So, I uninstalled it,
as well as the 100w module, downloaded the DSP firmware, and restarted the
K3 in the 10 w config'. All went well, so I
My K3 refuses to go any further than :
HI SIG
when I switch it on.
No control works, and if I want to switch it off with the power button, just
the digits, letter and icons disappear, but the display is still lit up. I
have to switch the PS off to stop it !
Did it happen to someone ?
Disconnect everything from all of its antenna ports and turn it on
again... Do you still get that message?

I just grabbed a signal generator from work and brought it home...
Turned on the preamp and at about .320mV rms I got a HI SIG warning and
poof the preamp was disabled.
Then turned the signal up further yet. I didn't note the point at which
it turned off exactly but it was just over 2Vrms.
-10 dB according to the K3 RF board schematic, page 4 of 4.

Makes sense...
Just found that on the FAQ page too...
Thanks much. Feels good knowing that there is at minimum an extra 10dB
of protection there!
Gotta love it!
