I don't believe that this is out of the range of possibilities w.r.t power out
for a radio that is functioning ok.

What I have found is that 13.8V vs 12.5V makes a difference
in output so I suspect that you are probably getting in excess of 3W
out at 13.8V.

I originally had similar concerns with my rig but finally I concluded that
a difference of .5 to 1W is almost indiscernible at the receiving end
so I stopped worrying about it and started making QSOs and enjoying
the rig.

I often run my KX1 off of a 10 pack of AA NiMH cells and this gives me
about 13.6V dc when fully charged. This puts me in the 3+ watt range on
all bands except 20M which is usually a bit below 3W.
