Hi Don,
many thanks for dissasembling instruction sharing! It seems that it will
force me to replace the jack in my K2 and giving the radio back to my daddy.
(he must operate with K1 as backup because of me...)

When I ordered my K2, I added a spare PA kit and a spare headphone jack to the
order, just in case ;-)

Hi Tomy,
it sounds like the problem with headphones jack on front pannel.
The same happened over here with my K2. It is still sleeping on the shelf as
front panel removing is needed. ;(

I just found my instruction for disassembling the K2 on the web at
http://www.qsl.net/wy3a/Replace_K2_Headphone_Jack.htm.
The instructions are specifically for the K2/100, but if you have the
K2/10, removing the top cover is similar to the instructions for
removing the KPA100.

Tomy,
Yes, that does indicate that the switch at the back of the headphone
jack has failed.
No it is not hard to replace *if* you know which screws to remove to
expose the jack.
If you do not have good desoldering equipment, crush the plastic part of
the jack with pliers or whatever tool wor
Adi,
This is a common failure with the jack. I believe
Elecraft will supply you with a replacement.

Curt,
Yes, the 3 pins at the rear of the switch are the ones for the switch,
and it is integral to the jack housing.
I can't recall which two of the 3 pins close the speaker circuit, but
since your speaker does not work, check continuity - the two that show

Thanks Don,
Is the part number you mentioned for the entire jack? I'm guessing the switch
is integral to the jack. And is there a way to confirm it is broken without
removing it. Looking at the headphone jack lands from the bottom of the rig

Curt,
The switch in the back part of the headphone jack (the switch that turns
the speaker on/off) has a plastic lever on it which does break on occasion.
Elecraft has tried unsuccessfully to have the manufacturer beef up that
lever, but unfortunately, it has been to no avail.
There is no othe
Chris,
In all probability, the little plastic lever which operates the switch
inside the headphone jack has broken. It usually fails with no speaker,
but it can fail either way.
It is a bit of a pain, but you can shut off the speaker by plugging an
empty jack into the external speaker jack o
I think I'm going to install a speaker/headphone switch on the back
panel so I can just leave the headphones plugged in all the time. Then
switch headphones & speaker as needed.
Apart from the mini-plug being relatively fragile, it's also annoying
to plug & unplug. It doesn't go very easily and I
I just replaced the connector on my K2 #4887 because the internal bypass

Eric,
I doubt if you got the wrong jack, but it is possible.
Check a few other things first - do you have the wires in the connector
housing correct, or are they reversed? Are you plugging the speaker
connector to P5 on the RF Board? A few builders have tried plugging it
into P5 on the Cont
I just put some pictures of a failed K2 headphone jack on my web page,

Tom,
Glad to hear the K2 is working good for you otherwise.
The normal problem is the other way around, the speaker does not come on
after removing the headset plug.
Although it could be that the headphone jack contact had failed to open, I
would consider that to be rare. You may want to check
James,
Before replacing, it may be that you only knocked it off center of the voice
coil.
Take out the speaker and view it from all angles. Is the Cone off center?
If the thing looks like it is, you might put three fingers and thumb equally
around edge of voice coil at narrow end of cone, and

Hi James,
I would order one from Elecraft, it is the one you `must have', it has an
output spl of 95 db which is very good efficiency, if you were to replace it
with anything else you have to match that number or better or the audio out
will be at a lower level for the same volume setting.

John,
It is very likely a wire stuck (magnetically) to the speaker and touching
the speaker cone. It could be on the outside of the speaker (if you are
fortunate) or it could be on the inside and you will have to remove the
speaker to see it.
