[Elecraft] k2 audio power
All, I am just returning from a mountaintop weekend running the June QSO party in a multi-op environment. The k2 I supplied for the 222 station worked great, but there were several complaints, and I will be attempting to fix these before it's next excursion into this environment. The main complaint from all operators was audio power. There are 2 stations in the truck, and it is noisy with all of the amplifier fans and other local qrm. The volume knob on the k2 was never set below 3/4 to full for the entire weekend. When we used a second op for logging and Y'ed the headphones it was definitely at full throttle. I will at least add an external audio amp, but an internal mod would be good because I think it would be usefull even at home. There were other complaints too, but minor in nature. Manual PTT for cw being one of the other problems. With all of the external sequencing required for transverters and preamps and power amps, it would really be nice if the k2 would switch to tx when I pounce on the footswitch in cw. Other than that we pulled out the weak ones! Also, the agc off function was used well to make a couple of meteor contacts on 222. Lots of nice pings overnight. [Elecraft] K2: RFC11
I'm looking for input on the winding and installation of toroid RFC11 which mounts underneath the K2's RF board. Assuming I wind RFC11 such that 85% of the toroid is used, I don't see how it can easily be secured by the leads given the location of the lead holes. How has this worked out for folks who have built their K2s? [Elecraft] New convert
I am a new HAM operator witha Tech+ ticket, (hopefully General after this weekend). I am presently building my K2 but it is going slowly due to lack of time. Last night, being pretty brain dead after four hours of studying for a commercial radio operators test, I decided to give 40-meters a try with my ICOM-718 on a mono-pole. Just for kicks, I turned it down to 10-watts. I couldn't get through to a couple CQ's but found one signal booming in from Toronto. I pounced on it and low and behold, he comes back to me...my second CW contact. It didn't last more than about 20-minutes but it was most gratifying. Needless to say, I was up at 0200 working on my K2. I work on a ship that goes to Japan, China, Taiwan and Korea. I am presently getting my tickets to run from these countries while I'm dockside. I hope to see a lot of you on 20-40 meters in the future. Buying an Elecraft transceiver is like having an extended family. Even though I haven't met most of you, I feel i'm getting to know you through your emails The building feedback from other members is fabulous. My K2 should be upand running before I go back out to sea in mid July. See ya'll on the air... Re: [Elecraft] K2 Test 2 OK, Test 3 power output problem
Jukka, I suggest you build the RF Probe provided with the K2 kit. Use the probe and your DMM to determine where the RF is being lost. In transmit mode (TUNE), you should find RF in ever increasing levels at the following points: TP1, Xmit Mixer - U10 pin 4 Xmit Buffer - U9 pin 6 (and input to the BPF - junction of D6 and D7 cathode ends) Pre-Driver - Q5 collector Driver - Q6 Collector PA Output - Q6 and Q7 collectors Low Pass Filter input and LPF output. 73, Don W3FPR - Original Message - I got to test and alignment part 2 last friday. Everything went according to the test procedure. 40 m RX worked well and I spent some time well into saturday night listening band with wire hanging from my balcony. It was quite amazing to hear stations with something I put together myself. Thanks to the great instruction manual! In sunday assembly part 3 was finished and I went on with test and alignment part 3. When I set 2 W and hit TUNE the power displayed stays 0.2-0.3 No change when adjusting L1 and L2. There is quite good peak when adjusting for RX, so I believe BPF is OK. I have been looking for bad solder joints in transformers and LPF. Already did again 40 m LPF toroids. There is some attenuation in the middle on 40 m lpf (crossing of L25, L26, C226, C228 and C229) when doing cheap and dirty signal tracing. Is it normal or may I have some problem there? Bad cap? All bands RX seem to be ok, but same power problem on all. I will check all parts once again and do voltage checks as per troubleshooting. Any other ideas? I don't have access to test equipment, only DMM, XG1 and N-gen. I sent e-mail to Elecraft support already, so I believe I get information from there too. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft You must subscribe to post. [Elecraft] K2 receive problem
I've just completed part 2 of my K2 RF board. I seem to have a problem on receive. I get no audio, and the S meter is reading maximum. If I select any of the CAL menu items or the ATU menu item, the receiver and S meter work normally. As soon as I exit the menu, it goes back to no audio and the S meter reading max. I can also receive between elements when keying. [HFpack] Elecraft KX1 mini-log attaches to back cover
When the KX1 is used hand-held, it's difficult to log, since you need three hands (one each for the KX1, log, and pen). To simplify this, we've created a loose-leaf mini-log that attaches to the back of the radio via the thumbscrews. When operating hand-held, you simply flip the rig over and log the QSO. Even when not operating hand-held, the log sheets can be stored in this location for ready access. They're easy to get off because of the two U-shaped channels for attachment at the thumbscrews. In our tests, the log worked well even with a solder lug attached at one thumb screw (for a trailing ground wire). You'll find a .pdf file for the mini-log, and a photo showing the log sheets in use, at: http://www.elecraft.com/KX1/KX1.htm Feel free to print out as many sheets as you'd like for your own use. We suggest heavy card stock, 65 pound or higher (about the weight of business card paper). Trim out the sheets carefully using an X-acto knife or other sharp tool. You can stack quite a few sheets under the thumb screws -- certainly enough for a typical outing. You could also cut out a piece of transparency stock or Vellum to protect the paper sheets during transport. This top sheet should be moved to the bottom of the stack during operation. We didn't include columns for mode or power output level. This info could be noted in the blank area at the right of the mini-log, since it's likely to be the same for a group of QSOs. Re: [Elecraft] KXPD1 assembly question
I don't know if it is right, but I rotated the lugs themselves so that one was in the channel at the bottom and then just bent the other one down towards the center of the hole and there was enough room to slide a piece of hooked wire in. [Elecraft] KX1 and K1 and K2 romp everything
We had a meeting of the CheeseHead QRP group last Monday. We had a plethora of radios setup on a bench with daisy chained antenna switches to antenna farm. There were rockmites, SGC's, Yaesu's and of course all 3 Elecrafts. The guys were blown away by the K2, the K1 they had already seen before as 2 members have them and then I pulled out the KX1 also. We setup all the radios and found the same station on about 7.040 and tuned all the rigs in and started doing A/B switching. Unfortunately from there it got dirtyall 3 Elecrafts were just phenomenal, the only other rigs that came close were a SGC and the new 200 watt Kenwood (yeah right what are these rigs doing here against QRP rigswell it didn't matter it was basically a receiver and filtering test). Also in the mix was my buddy's (whom I won't name by name but he knows who he is) Yaesu FT897. Well everyone agreed that on this 40 meter CW signal that the 897 just couldn't compete with anything, even the KX1 was blowing it's doors off for sensitivity and selectivity. Of course the rest of the evening went downhill as we kept hasseling him about the Yaesu. But I did loan him my KX1 so I'm thinking he'll probably pop for an Elecraft product pretty soon. As an afternote, I was out of town the rest of the week at a Boy Scout Camp doing some volunteer work and the Director of the Scout Council was also there (W9MC Mike), and he's a CheeseHead alsowell he was delighted in telling my that Bill, the Yaesu owner, ordered the Collins style CW filter for his 897 the next day after he was so severely pounded. RE: [Elecraft] KX1 S-Meter Scale and Zero Set confusion
The only procedure listed in the manual is the one found on p65 of the manual in the SIG row of the table (summarized): Set [L: 40-99] for zero bars indication in S-meter mode with no signal. Set [H: 2-7] for 6 bars with an approx S9+20 dB signal injected. I have a slightly different procedure, as I found that adjusting H after L changed the zero set (kind of like when you tune a guitar one string after another the strings you tune after the first end up changing the tune of the fist string and you have to run through it again). But I am running my procedure by Eric and Wayne offline before I post it here. dt . -Original Message- From: David Toepfer [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Sunday, June 13, 2004 8:14 PM To: Chuck Gehring; elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] KX1 S-Meter Scale and Zero Set confusion I am not sure it is super critical, as it is audio based, but I have a procedure I believe is more detailed than is in the manual which I will submit to the list for Wayne and Eric's and the other experts' review when I get home. dt .. --- Chuck Gehring [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I am having a great time with my KX1 #641. Gotta Love the way Wayne thinks. These templets work great. I did need to enlarge them some to fit on to my KX1. For some reason the template as sent was about 90% the size that fit the rig. Now I am ready to hit the field and travel. There is even enough room to write notes on the back if you do happen to have a pen or pencil handy, by just turning over the log. [Elecraft] KPA 100 Alignment Question
Hi All, Have just completed my KPA100, and am at the aligment stage. Regarding the aligment of R6 (Bias set). The manual says to connect your DMM in series with the positive power lead, with the + lead of the DMM to the power supply and the - lead to the KPA100 side. I assume this means I connect the +lead of the DMM to + terminal of the PSU, and the -lead of the DMM to +pin of the power connecter where it enters the radio?? Is this correct?? Just for interests sake, what am I actually doing at this stage of the alignment? [Elecraft] 80m Reflector problem
I was aligning the SSB filter settings on my K2 and listening on another radio. Once I had it set, I started a QSO on 80m and was making further adjustments to the filters. I didn't notice it at first, but I started hearing the last 5 seconds of my transmissions at approximately S5. Thinking that someone was recording my voice and playing it back, I commented to the guy I was speaking with but he couldn't hear it. We thought this was strange since on 80m generally, you can hear about anyone. Over the past few weeks, I have come to determine that there is something strange going on. It is happening on two transceivers, the K2 and a Yaesu FT-897D. When I key the mic and speak quickly, saying for instance Test and quickly release the PTT, I hear my signal after about 1.52 seconds of delay. This is considerably shorter than the 5 seconds of rebroadcast noted above. If I send CW, the letter K, I will get a K, (dah di dah) back. If I send a string of dots at 12wpm, I will get at most three dots back. So if I send one dot, I get none, two I get one, three I get two, four and higher I get three. I can only assume that the first dot is triggering a repeater?? The reflected signal also increases with power output. It is about S5 with 100w and about S8 or so when I run the amp. It is not a person recording me since I quickly tuned around the band and even switched sidebands several times. The returning signal is always exactly on frequency. It doesn't happen on other bands that I am aware of. It doesn't happen all the time but lately I noticed it consistently during the day. I made several recordings ( I can forward them) and it looks like the signal is always approximately 1.52 seconds delayed and lasts about 1 second. It can't be long path propagation since 1.52 seconds works out to about 282,000 miles. My antenna is pointed at a cell tower. I also have large LORAN towers and other sea navigation towers about a mile from me. Anyone ever hear of something like this? It must be a repeater of some kind. Re: [Elecraft] k2 audio power
Ed: I used two K2's at W3CCX over the weekend. I found one of them to be usable under the multimulti conditions. That was not mine, but one built by John Sortor, KB3XG. He had mounted an auxiliary audio amplifier in the lid and it made a world of difference. We did over a million points for the first time in Packrats history. I will be adding external amplifiers to the ones I will be using for FD (2 transmitter, K2 QRP with AB2KT, W2GD, N2NT, N2NC, W2RQ, and other FRC'ers that show up) because it is simply a requirement for this kind of noisy environment. Bob N4HY Ed and all, Audio - I do use an external audio amplifier with the K2. CW PTT input - I am in the final stages of testing a mod to provide PTT in CW mode. It involves removing RF Board R1 and R2 and inserting a logic AND at that point. The only inconvience (which is not likely to be resolved soon) is that the same PTT input input used for CW will not function on SSB without manually changing an added switch. The normal mic jack PTT still work as it does now, and SSB VOX is not changed. If you would like to experiment with me, send me a note and I will scan the sheet with the schematic and instructions and send it to you. It will find its way to my website in due time. 73, Don W3FPR Life is what happens when you are making other plans - Original Message - I will at least add an external audio amp, but an internal mod would be good because I think it would be usefull even at home. [Elecraft] Application Note: KX1 S-meter calibration procedure
This procedure got an initial nod from Wayne so I am posting it to the list for broader peer review as it were... kb3ipe dt . The procedure outlined on p65 in the SIG row of the table for adjusting the S-meter calibration does not seem to work well for me, so I have developed and followed this procedure, which is similar but takes into account the apparent effect adjusting H has on L. If you find this procedure to be correct and superior it would probably best fit on p68 between the VFO Lock/Unlock procedure and the Operating Frequency Calibration procedure. 1) Set LEd to InF. 2) For each H setting record the L settings that result in s9 (5 bars) with an Elecraft XG1 Receiver Test Oscillator / S-Meter Calibrator attached and set to 50uV: Example: H L - - 2 50, 51 3 55, 56, 57 4 60, 61, 62, 63 5 65, 66, 67, 68, 69 6 70, 71, 72, 73, 74, 75 7 75, 76, 77, 78, 79, 80, 81 3) Then remove all values (indicated in []'s) that show even anything more than all blank (including a flashing 1) with an Elecraft DL1 Wideband 20W Dummy Load connected: Example (cont.): H L - - 2 [50, 51] 3 [55, 56, 57] 4 [60, 61, 62, 63] 5 [65, 66, 67, 68, 69] 6 [70, 71, 72,] 73, 74, 75 7 75, 76, 77, 78, 79, [80, 81] 4) Set for the lowest H value (indicated in ()'s) with L values not all eliminated and then set for that lowest non-eliminated L value (indicated in ()'s): Example (cont.): H L - - [...] (6) [70, 71, 72,] (73), 74, 75 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft You must subscribe to post.
