How does KPA500 stand in RTTY contests? Any experience?
I am interested in user s experience and opinion of Elecraft itself.
- Working all the time, can you use full power or must reduce? Down to
what level?
- Cooling blower too noisy?
- What else? Your opinion, please.

Hi Gary,
The quickest way to determine if the P3 is talking to the K3 is to look at
the top of the P3 display. If the current K3 frequency is not displayed in
the center of the screen then you have not established communications.

Benny,
The KPA500 is specified for 500 watts output for CW/SSB/Data modes, so
no de-rating for RTTY is required.
I recall during Field Test, K9YC was instructed to run an RTTY contest
at 700 watts output just to 'see what happens' - the KPA500 survived nicely.

I can confirm Don's comments.
As a field tester I have abused the kpa500 also, and it just does the job
perfect...1,000;s of QSO's and still up to spec with no issues.

Anyone have a good, clean, working KX1 for sale, or thinking of selling to get

A cheap computer headset also works well if you want to do phone on the KX3 --
many have separate headphone and mic connectors that plug straight into the KX3.

This may be premature, but if you don't find trouble, it could have been that
the 'crowbar' circuit on the regulator board may have operated to protect your
radio from high voltage, in which case doing a power cycle on the PS will have
reset it.
We had a thread relating to this one year ago.
Thank you Dick. I will be returning to that QTH with another power supply and
cable, deoxit and sandpaper to clean connections. I did turn the offending
Astron supply off and on at the switch but didn't unplug it. Would that have
been enough to reset the crowbar circuit?

Yes, that will reset the crowbar SCR. The DC must return to zero for it to
reset.
I would recommend a brass brush for cleaning connections if possible, and maybe
a .22 caliber brush (used for cleaning guns) for getting into some places. I'd
not use anything too abrasive. (I never touch gold
