That is very odd indeed. You should measure at the other end of the wires, to see what the radio is seeing, but I'm afraid that would make it even worse. Can you measure the current being drawn? That would be an interesting figure. Are you certain RF isn't getting into the PS or the meter?

You have to leave tune mode, and reenter tune mode occasionally to get the power to reset. I believe the book says 10 seconds for thermal reasons. Anyhow, just iterate between the two, going against a stop if that's the max, until you get the best you can get. It probably won't be against either
