Alan, I think you may have unwittingly hit on one explanation for Long Delayed Echos. All those CW characters freeze on the antenna and stay there untill a thaw, then they melt and radiate(at least some do, many may just drip onto the ground). Then, you hear them and think, AHA,an LDE!!.

I lucked out several years ago at Sears and found a combination digital/analog meter. Has all the usual DMM functions, plus an analog movement. Wonderful for peaking, etc! Unfortunately, I think Sears has discontinued it(naturally), haven't seen anything similar for quite some time.

No, no, no!! The modern, HI-Tech way to do it is to build up a circuit to charge at least a 10 F supercap and discharge it through the fuse, thereby clearing the short. The supercap is guaranteed to un-short almost any fuse you are likely to find, and could also be handy for jump starting
