Sorry to hear about the issues. When you sent the radio back, did you sent
back the mic as well? I'm wondering if they tried to replicate it with the
same mike you're using. My best guess is it's a problem with the microphone
connector - either the plug or the socket - maybe the two aren't meshing
properly. From what you describe, it sounds like the KX2 itself functions
without issue, when not using the mike - confirm?

I couldn't figure it out, as I ordered a K4D in February with no deposit,

Hi Pete - apparently (my guess) demand is high enough that they don't need
to capture funds right away.

When your radio is nearing the top of the queue (but not necessarily ready
to ship), they'll send you an invoice for payment in full, and your radio
will ship shortly thereafter.

I don't speak for Elecraft. This is just my own recent experience.

In short, they won't bill you until your radio is "just about ready."

Hang on, that's not what happened. The inexperienced op who answered the
call of a high speed contest op didn't call anyone elitist. Those were two
different people.

In the interest of protecting and preserving the valuable spectrum we've
been allocated, it might be good for infighting to take a back seat, or at
least a less visible one (ie let's get along with each other in public
despite differences). There are plenty non-ham entities eager to profit
from our currently non profit bandwidth (ex: see 1988 FCC reallocation
order for 220-222 MHz), Cascading effects might include the snuffing out of
radio related, innovative small businesses, which ultimately isn't good for
our hobby, sport, interest, learning, advancement and service.

Among the best ways to get better at something is to practice, and often a
better way is to practice while jumping into a live scenario (as opposed to
simulated or offline) before you're reasonably proficient. I wouldn't
recommend that approach for learning how to fly an airplane or drive a car,
but for learning a spoken language or improving CW sending, sure.
Non-contesting operation doesn't cease when big contests are running.

There's not a lot you can do to change their behavior, so why not focus on
what you can control: Both could easily be solved by, when hearing a faint,
sloppy QRP station answering your call, simply ignoring them. A bad fist
should be easy to identify in a few seconds. Answer someone else, or call
CQ again. Their feelings might be hurt briefly, but they'll understand and
you won't waste time.

For many of us, maybe not the hard core contesters, the joy of contesting
is keying by hand and taking notes on paper, and don't have a lot of
interest in tying a computer to the radio and sending by keyboard
(excepting QRQ operation where using a keyboard is the only choice).

All that said, I understand your frustration.

Last week I removed some options that I no longer need from my K2. I'm
keeping the K2/10 with the audio CW filter, but have the following
available, if anyone is interested in them separately. Please note that
some options might require a couple components that I am leaving in place
on my K2 as they would be hard to unsolder - you would need to procure
those items on your own.

Available, assembled:

- K160RX 160 meter board, Rev D
- K60XV 60 meter & transverter board, Rev B
- KSB2 SSB board, Rev D, IC firmware 1.07
- KDSP2 DSP board and real time clock, Rev (?)

Prices TBD, haven't researched it yet.

My s/n 892 currently has RP2 = 10k, not 100k. Does the 2.7k still need to
be added across pins 7 and 8?

From the PLL Ref Upgrade kit docs (E850138), it sounds like it might need
to be added regardless of 10k/100k, as the first step below doesn't
differentiate, while the next step does:

[_] If your K2 serial number is lower than 3000, make sure you have
installed the BFO modification (BFOMDKT). One of the items supplied in this
kit is a 2.7-k resistor. This resistor, designated R19, must be soldered
across pins 7 and 8 of resistor network WP2 (in the PLL area).

[_] If you have an older K2 (early revision A for Field Test), you may have
a 100k resistor network installed at RP2, which is in the VCO area. If so,
you'll need to solder two 10k to 12k resistors across RP2, which can be
difficult...

[Elecraft] How do I know if my K2 has BFOMDKT installed?

I just installed the temperature compensated PLL reference upgrade kit on
my K2 #892.

up to date in almost every way.

One step in the assembly instructions says that for S/N < 3000, make sure
I've installed the BFOMDKT upgrade, and that the kit includes a 2.7k
resistor R19 that's soldered across pins 7 and 8 of RP2 (according to
document "Upgrading the Elecraft K2 to Revision B").

My RP2 (10K) has no resistor across any pins. However, I do have L33
upgraded to the prewound 41 uH inductor, which I think was part of the
BFOMDKT.

Should I be adding 2.7k across pins 7 and 8? Is there any reason this would
not have been done as part of the BFOMDKIT upgrade?

Brian - if you had nickel for every time someone declared one rig is better
than another without knowing your needs or offering reasons to back it up,
you could buy both ;)

As many will say, don't over think sensitivity. You'll probably find many

tried out (works fine) but am not likely to use. If I can figure out how to

supply chains and labor, coupled with inflation, I have to wonder how they
could possibly give an answer other than "as long as possible."

Something you might consider (maybe you already have) is buy a backup K3S
to serve as a donor if something goes south with your main one. There are
loads of them coming on the market now, and if you already have a working
one, you have more time to hold out for a good price on a second one. This
is exactly what I did for an Omni D recently. It's great peace of mind for
when something goes wrong (when, not if :)

Hi all - thanks for the replies regarding speakers.

I do occasionally check the local thrift shop to see if there are any
electronics on the shelf to take apart for components, and they do
currently have a set of amplified PC speakers for short money. But I got
bit by the homebrewing bug recently so I want to build something from
salvaged components. I think I have everything on hand now to do that.

I mentioned this project to my son a few weeks ago - told him I bought some
cheap amplified speakers at Best Buy then returned them, unopened, because
it occurred to me I'm a ham so I should be able to build my own instead. He
says good idea, that way you'll appreciate them more every time you use
them.

How it took him 5 seconds to realize that, and 30+ years (as a ham) for me,
is beyond me ;)

[Elecraft] KX2 WTB(uild) external amplified speaker

KX2 arrived yesterday after a ~15 week wait, which was pretty much spot on
with Elecraft's original estimate.

One of the best features is, especially for a compact rig with limited
dedicated controls, the ability to assign a programmable function button to
an otherwise buried menu feature. For menu features that are binary choices
(such as enable/disable CW transmit), not only does the PFn button activate
the menu item, but it also toggles the parameter and dumps you right back
into operating mode. For example, you can toggle between "CW transmit" and
"CW practice (no transmit)" by pressing only two buttons. No need to go
through deep menus. Kudos to KX2 designers for thinking ahead.

One of the not so great features is the internal speaker. It's even raspier
and more distorted than the forward-facing one supplied with the KX3. This
is to be expected; there are design trade-offs and this rig wasn't designed
to be a desktop model with high wattage audio output.

My typical use case for the KX2 is to listen to it in the background on the
desktop with good quality speaker audio, and then to switch to
headphones/earphones when in QSO.

So I'd like to build an audio amplifier to convert the KX2 headphone output
levels to say 5 watt speaker output (one of the two channels will suffice)
for listening to relatively undistorted audio in the shack. A good starting
point is knowing what the output level and impedance is for the headphones
jack. I measured approx 20 mV P-P (impedance unknown) at an audio output
level around "AF 10" according to the KX2 display. Does this sound about
right?

Bonus points: First QSO with the KX2 was from Maine to Bermuda at 1 watt.

Plain Utz is my favorite! But with ruffles. For Cape Cod it's the dark

the alternative - nearest UPS depot - was a 90 mile round trip. You pay for
the convenience of having a drop-off location close by, not having to pay
high fuel costs for a 90 mile drive, not having to spend a minimum of 3
hours for that effort, etc.

Priority, and there's probably a real USPS office near your location.

Apologies for getting off topic on a thread about our opinions of shipping
carriers and their prices but I have an Elecraft related question.

Got a note from Elecraft last Friday saying the KX2 ordered on Jan 1 is
ready to ship. Years ago I used a KX1 (sold, sadly!) with binding posts at
the transceiver feeding a radiator plus 2 or 3 counterpoise wires, with
some success. However, much of my KX2 use will be in the shack, where I'd
like to run coax to outside of the house before hitting the feedpoint -
figuring the radiator wouldn't do much good running mostly inside the
house. I'm thinking an end fed wire half wave with appropriate balun could
be good, as long as the radiator is outside the house. What would be an
appropriate configuration for the coax-to-radiator transition, or for this
setup in general? Looking to operate primarily on 40 meter CW. Suggestions
welcome.

Other than trying to remember and ignore by subject line, is there a way to
mute specific threads on the Elecraft mailing list (via qth.net)? Maybe I'm
thinking of the feature on @groups.io mailing lists - but this would be
helpful as Elecraft related topics morph into posts containing no Elecraft
content. While this content has value, it also dilutes value, as it's not
Elecraft specific.

I wonder if the K4 & tuner could a good enough approximation based on RX
signal level or even background noise level.

When I've done this manually, for both outside and within the ham bands,
using the L & C on my external tuner, I can hear the difference and know
generally where a good match is found.

Surely the K4 could do better than my ears. Seems like this would be
possible without even transmitting. Could be a great feature.

I'm not sure how big a company Flex is, but Elecraft is a small one doing a
great design and development and putting out some amazing products, while
having limited resources. A fair comparison might be against a company in a
similar position. Again, not saying Flex isn't (I don't know). Certainly
not the big three.

Hi Don - thanks for the suggestion. Any idea if the scratchy audio would
persist if the KDSP2 was put into bypass mode? I tried that and scratchy
audio was still there.

I replaced the KDSP2 with a newly built KAF2 today and am happy to report
the noise is gone. Not sure if the board swap had anything to do with it,
but everything sounds great now and hope that continues.

[Elecraft] K2 scratchy noise on RX CW signals

Hi Elecrafters -

Today I took delivery of K2 #892 and very happy to have it in the shack
after selling my #4958, I think it was, years ago... if anyone has it I'd
like it back please). This #892 has a "static sounding" scratchy/raspy
noise on top of CW signals. It sounds similar to what you'd hear from an
oxidized audio frequency pot. The strength and presence of the noise is
proportional to the incoming CW signal strength.

The rig is running from a clean, large high current capacity battery so I'm
sure the supply power is good. The noise occurs across multiple bands. I
get the sense it's something in the audio chain. The installed KDSP2
digital audio filter has already been put in bypass mode and the scratchies
persist.

Before I continue debugging I wanted to see if anyone had suggestions about
what components to target.

Apple's Lightning to 30 pin adapter should work with that setup on the
newer (Lightning) models. I am using Griffin iMic with newer iPad mini
(Lightning) and the adapter no prob. I suggest you use Apple's one not a
knockoff.

[Elecraft] Followup - iOS controlling K2 via RS-232

Followup on the iPhone as a wired remote control for K2:

Thanks to the redpark.com cable, it's working - got a prototype iPhone app
doing reads/writes directly with no need for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or other
devices inbetween (well there is an embedded controller inside the cable,
but the cable still just looks like a cable).

Since the K2's AUX I/O pinout isn't the same as the RS-232 standard (NEVER
attach a 'full' RS-232 cable directly to the K2!) a second cable is needed
between the K2 and the redpark cable. In my case I simply wired pin 2 to 2,
pin 3 to 3, pin 5 to 5 (signal ground). Also, on the K2 end only, attached
the bare wire to pin 1 (chassis ground), and on the  end that mates to the
redpark cable, wired pin 7 to 8 (RTS/CTS loopback, see p. 13 of Elecraft
KIO2 manual, Rev. C).

I'm using redpark's C2-DB9V.

[Elecraft] iPad as wired remote for Elecraft rig?

I've searched a lot and can't find the answer so I'm asking the group.

Is it possible to use the iPad as detachable head for a K2, K3 or KX3,
using a direct connection (no Bluetooth / PC / wireless / Internet)?

I know the Apple Camera Connectivity Kit with some USB audio adapters give
you a panadapter for the KX3 but I'm interested in very basic primary
control (tuning, filters) and display (frequency) by sending and receiving
commands via USB.

I have a feeling that when you connect the iPad to the KUSB via the the
Camera Connectivity Kit, iOS will say unsupported device, but I don't
have a KUSB here - can anyone confirm?

Even so, is it possible to write an app to communicate with the rig in this
setup, despite the lack of official support? I realize that won't have
Apple's blessing but I'm interested in running this on my own device, not
putting it in the store.

Thanks for the responses.

I've come across a possible solution from redpark.com, who sells an
iPad/iPhone-to-DB9 cable with some smarts inside, to provide either TTL or
RS-232 level communication directly with an external device.

I realize I will need a custom cable between this one and the K2's AUX I/O
connector (do NOT attempt to plug it into the rig directly), but that
shouldn't be a problem.

The Redpark RS-232 cable comes in two flavors - one that uses UART pins on
the 30-pin connector, and one that uses USB pins. They recommended the USB
version (C2-DB9V cable) in my case, as there may be some unresolved issue
with iOS 6.1.x when using the UART version. Redpark provides an Xcode SDK
for communicating with the serial device through their cable. From the
coding standpoint the SDK is the same regardless of which (USB/UART) cable
is used.

Since this isn't an Apple-blessed setup, apps developed for it are for
private/internal use only and will not be allowed for sale (or even for
free) in the Apple Store, but it may be just the ticket for my needs.

Re: [Elecraft] Owner of a MAC and KX3

Mac running a recent version of OS X works fine with the KX3. The only
trouble I ran into was trying to reload the factory/original config file -
for some reason the Mac's KX3 Utility wouldn't recognize the file format,
so I moved to a PC and reloaded it there without a problem. You aren'y
likely to need to reload the factory config though - this was due to
another issue I was trying to solve.

If you launch the KX3 Utility and don't see any comm ports in the pulldown
list, you probably don't have the right FTDI USB drivers installed - common
problem that many of us have run into, and easy to fix with a download.

For normal operation you should be all set.

There's a menu setting somewhere in there that determines the source for
the sidetone. You probably inadvertently changed it from U8-4 to U6-25, or
vice versa. Go into the menu settings and try setting it to whichever the
other one is.

Dennis:

Disclaimer: this is not an official fix from Elecraft, nor is the
scratchy encoder necessarily a problem and it will likely smooth out with
use. Proceed at your own risk.

Similar scratchy on mine. Per someone else's suggestion, I removed the
encoder's washer (you don't need to remove the nut), polished both sides
using a Dremel tool (use a polishing bit with a little dab of polishing
compound) -- not a sanding or grinding bit! -- and applied a small bit of
white lithium grease. Great improvement, I'd say 98% smooth.

Seems like the K3 clock drift could be corrected automatically with a small
software application - assuming the K3 is connected to a PC, just let the
app launch at boot time and have it periodically send the PC's time to the
K3, without any user interaction. Most modern OS should have the option to
keep their clocks in sync with network time, which should be good enough.
No need to do it manually ever 2 weeks, or 6 months, or whatever.

I have it working with only the following:

- Griffin iMic
- Apple Camera Connectivity Kit
- iPad 2

I can't remember exactly why but I ended up hacking together my own cable
from the Griffin to the PC. But it's still a simple stereo audio cable.

I have to admit I was very eager to get it all working, even to the point
of expedited shipping for the Griffin from Amazon, but after I got it
working, I haven't gone back to it, not even once.  It all seemed very
fiddly, tethered, and simply not radio to me.

However, it is working and I'll be glad to go over the setup with you (and
anyone else) off-list if you need a hand.

Might even be kind of fun getting it set up again here - maybe I'll change
my mind!

being turned on, for blazing fast QSK). There's been some discussion that
limited RIT will be restored while in QRQ mode in the future.

It sounds like it's effectively the same thing, unless I'm just not
understanding something. If QRQ is on, and you engage RIT, QRQ is then
automatically turned off. So while QRQ is on, you have no RIT.

Distortion beyond 35 WPM:

I was under the impression that this was addressed - to a limit - during
the development of CW+ (QRQ) mode, and that QRQ mode (further) extended
that limit to nearly WPM with accurate elements.

That is, even without QRQ mode enabled, accurate timing of elements was
achieved to some WPM beyond 35.

Wayne, can you clarify?  Is QRQ mode required for accurate timing at any
speed above 35?

Actually, it does in fact turn off RIT. I just did the following on K3
running firmware 4.51:

- Tune to 7024 kHz
- In CONFIG, set CW QRQ:Off
- Tap RIT and tune RIT (smaller VFO knob) to 7025 kHz. Delta-F and RIT +
LEDs light up.
- Transmit a dit. RIT is active. TX occurs on 7024 and RX occurs on 7025.
- In CONFIG, set CW QRQ:On
- Delta-F and RIT + LEDs turn off.
- Transmit a dit. TX and RX occur on 7024.

That said, the important part to note here (and maybe what I should have
said from the start) is that, as you said, QRQ mode and RIT are
incompatible (at this time...)

While it would be nice to have a little RIT leeway during QRQ=on, I think
the current implementation is a great compromise until that leeway can be
found. It's certainly more convenient than entering the config menu,
changing a parameter and exiting, or dedicating a couple programmable
function keys to it. And since RIT is used when the other station is
transmitting, blazing fast QSK is moot during that time anyway. Yes it's
inconvenient to break the station and then have to pause and clear RIT in
order to get super QSK back again, but everything in life is a tradeoff...
my biggest wish for the K3 was superb QRQ timing and they found a way to do
it... rock on, Elecraft!

I originally tried a stereo USB sound card but found that the iPad didn't
recognize it. Ended up going the iSDR / Griffin iMic route, through the
Apple camera connectivity kit, and it worked. I ordered the Griffin through
Amazon because, as you have found, the local stories 1) never heard of it
and 2) don't carry it.

By minimalist I'm referring not to the price, but to the construction of
the antenna, if it's what people say it is.

I'm not saying people should run out and buy one; my point (and only point)
is Philip had (and enjoyed) success with something others are quick to
dismiss as junk.  As Philip said, I encourage others to do the same.  Not
saying you have to spend $130 :)

That's the thrill of QRP: Doing more with less, and sometimes intentionally

For many, it amplifies the fun factor.

No disrespect to QRO and bigger/better antennas... they're great too.

It's a long shot and may be completely irrelevant but what's your AGC
threshold (MENU: AGC*THR)?  Default is now 005 (was 007 in the past), but
wonder if you've tried varying it.

Regarding receiver performance - again, maybe a stretch here - but when I
first got my KX3, I found myself in disbelief at the fact that a signal was
so weak, until I realized I was listening to it on the wrong side of zero
beat. For whatever reason, it was just copyable, and instead of tuning

away, and found the real signal. I don't imagine that's your problem but
thought I'd mention it. I assume the differences you're hearing between KX3

Not everyone has the same antenna system or distance from potential
noise sources, which could explain all the differing opinions.

In my shack, where a fluorescent lamp is located only four feet from
the rig, I recently switched from a 40 meter coax-fed dipole to a
random wire with counterpoise directly into the K3, no coax. Lots of
noise.  Turn the switch off, noise goes away.  Not a problem with
coax-fed dipole.

My bad - I (too quickly) assumed this was about conventional fluorescents.

I'm almost certain all the fluorescents in the house are of the newer
(electronic) ballast type.

We do have plenty CFLs in the house too, including two about ten feet
from the shack. Time for some testing.

I too found CWT spot on - pun intended. Accurate every time.

NR seems to make the signal a little raspier than I remember in the
past; haven't used it much in a few months but just happened to notice
it recently. Wonder if anything has changed. Then again, I've changed
antenna systems, have more local noise and have not tweaked it off
default settings, so I can't say for a fact that it's NR alone.

[Elecraft] K3: Anyone running HRD on Mac via Wine?

I installed Ham Radio Deluxe for Windows on a MacBook Pro running Mountain
Lion (OS X 10.8), using the Wine emulator.

HRD tracks changes made on the radio just fine, and when I click buttons on
HRD, it controls the rig.

But if I attempt to click on any HRD control other than a button (such as a
slider control), the X11 server crashes with a BadWindow (invalid Window
parameter) error.

Fortunately, HRD allows you to use simply point to the slider and use the
scroll wheel on the mouse to move it up and down, so it's a great
workaround.

But I wonder if anyone has it fully working on a similar setup.

Even easier: Why not just get a screw-on UHF connector cap?

Fits perfectly, and it's the best mike connector protector ever - it
makes sure a mike is never attached to my K2 so it can be used only for
CW... :

Seriously, the cap is a perfect fit. I can't remember where I got mine but
it was likely from a Diamond Antenna mobile mount, and I suspect you can
find them elsewhere.

If you can't, I will mai you one of my spares.

And another great resource, if you want to build your own practice files,
is ebook2cw,written by Fabian Kurz, DJ1YFK.  Converts text to really nice
sounding CW, with control over rise/fall times, pitch, timing, etc...
Command line version works great on Mac OS X, and I believe it also runs on
Windows and Linux.

I use it frequently to convert chunks of practice text to mp3 files, burn
it on a disc and practice by listening to it while mobile.

While we're on the subject of computer-based CW learning and operating -
another perhaps lesser-known setup that may be worth checking out is the
CW-over-Internet approach using FLDigi and Mumble software, which provides
multi-user, high audio quality, low latency CW over the net via a server.

Some of the great advantages of this system for those wanting to build CW
speed is that it's available 24/7 and eliminates the dependency on good
band conditions, propagation or being tied to your shack. You can have
live QSOs in near perfect conditions pretty much whenever you want it,
which is a huge help in building skill and speed.

Chuck/AA0HW has put loads of research into tweaking the setup for best
results, providing ways to interface your paddle and key to the system,
generating pleasant sounding sidetones, etc. Users on Chuck's server tend
to focus on QRQ but everyone's welcome. Chuck has created videos detailing
how to set up the software.

Again, a very different experience than sitting in front of a radio, but
can be highly enjoyable even for seasoned CW ops.

I don't have much experience with contesting but I'll add that one of my
favorite uses for the noise reduction (NR) feature is to cut down on ear
fatigue from atmospheric noise when I have the rig on in the background
all day.

I like to listen to the band with a wide filter setting so I can tune to
something interesting when I hear it, but that constant background noise is
hard on my ears after a while. NR solves it.

I often disable NR when I'm tuned to a signal of interest, because it
sounds more natural to me.

That may be true in terms of power gain, but there may be some value in
having the speakers front-firing instead of top-firing like the K3's
built-in speaker.

Another cheap/easy solution might be a PVC pipe 90-degree elbow sitting on
top of the rig to redirect the sound (mono only).

I just spoke with Elecraft on the phone and was told that (correct me if
I'm wrong, Elecraft) anyone who was sent upgrade kits with incorrect
springs will receive another kit with the right springs. Sounds like
they're sending these out in batches, and from what I understand the wait
time is measured in weeks not months. I did not get the sense that you
needed to contact Elecraft in order for this to happen.

Again, hope Wayne/etc will correct me if I'm wrong... I don't speak for
Elecraft.

Depends on the band - although I don't venture far off 40 meters, I used to
have preamp on all the time on 40 until I read that due to noisy 40, the
noise that the preamp amplifies is much harder on the ears than copying a
reasonably strong signal without the preamp. I turned it off a year or two
ago and haven't even noticed. Of course I may be missing some very weak
signals... All depends on who/how you operate.

For higher (and less noisy) bands, I believe preamp is often preferred.

I've never been into any mode other than CW, but this morning I tried
RTTY and PSK31 on the KX3 for the first time.

I too was very impressed. Very well implemented on the KX3 and I
particularly like being able to use the CW paddle for input.  I don't
like being tied to the computer for this work (though I understand
that has much to offer).

I'm looking forward to doing more with this mode (but CW will always be #1! :)

[Elecraft] KXPD3 upgrade: Confusion on labeling, which springs included?

My KXPD3 upgrade arrived today.

First, thank you Elecraft for providing this free of charge. This
change involves not just the new PCB, wrench, contact screw and
springs, but also research, field testing, app note, packaging,
shipping, etc... times the number of KXPD3 units affected.  That's no
small deal.

I have a question about what I received:

The application note says I should have received:

E980236 (Spring, Light)
E980240 (Spring, Medium)

...but I received:

E980218 (Spring, KXPD3 Firm)
E980239 (Spring, KXPD3 .014x11.5 Light)

So I'm not quite sure what I have. Neither part number on the
envelopes matches the application note, and one of them says Firm
instead of Medium. I assume what's in my original KXPD3 (from KX3
#797) is Firm.

To use test mode for practicing CW sending on the K1:

Select the OUT  menu entry and hold EDIT to display the power output level.

Next, hold DISPLAY.

The power output parameter will change to P = 0 , indicating that
the transmitter is disabled.

To restore the original power level setting, hold DISPLAY  again.

For CW practice on the KX3, can't you just hold VOX to put the rig in PTT
mode, to effectively disable the TX? (toggle it back to VOX to enable the
TX)

While the features and UI on the K3 are clearly more extensive, don't
confuse that with it being a better rig for all but trail/backpack use.
Elecraft already has a rig that's probably better for trail/backpacking:
the KX1 (though it's not as full-featured).

The KX3 may still win for those wanting a:

- rig with a simple user interface and few controls
- rig to run as a base station on solar power
- rig to run in confined quarters (like my tiny shack...)
- vacation rig
- mobile rig

As many have pointed out, step 1 is figure out what you want to do.

For me, if the rig was staying put in the shack, the K3 would be the
answer. If I envisioned it moving about from time to time - camping,
vacation, mobile, trailer, etc... - then the KX3 would be it.

If you want to focus strictly on performance, go K3.  But the KX3 is no
slouch. Buck's desktop/laptop analogy is a good one.

The manual states:

*Loosen the two rear thumbscrews before adjusting the legs. Tighten
them afterwards.*

...and if that method is followed, it's simple and works 100 percent. If
the leg movement were simply friction-based without screws, it would be
even simpler, but maybe at the expense of them loosening up over time due
to mechanical wear and not being able to be adjusted.

(Of course that doesn't invalidate your preference for being able to just
move the legs without dealing with the screws.)

[Elecraft] Is a K3 ATU with balanced outputs possible?

I'd love to see a K3 built-in ATU with balanced outputs to feed ladder
line. Has this been considered and dismissed, or is it a possibility for a
future option?

I'm guessing this might be a problem for the already crowded rear panel,
but could it be provided as a plug-in board (like the KANT3 or the KAT3)
that uses the two antenna ports (ANT1, ANT2) for the two sides of the
ladder line, and does away with the SO239 altogether?

Failing that, could the functionality be provided in the KAT500?

Apologies if this has already been discussed; I haven't found much
discussion on it in the archives.

Great; thank you for the trivia, very helpful. I figured it had already
been considered and that there was a good reason for the current
configuration.

The BL2 following the KAT3 was exactly one option I was considering. I've
read about several cases in which ops had success, but read others in which
the balun was heating perhaps due to excessive reactance on the antenna
side. Reactance is likely dependent on the frequency/band and several
factors in the antenna system which could explain the mixed results.

I think I will try this approach and enjoy the experimenting.

All: Not looking to turn this in to an OT antenna theory thread, but if you
have specific experience with this configuration, I'd like to hear (KAT3 to
BL2 to ladder to simple dipole).

I found the same as you with the bright OFS/B LEDs.

This may sound cheesy, but the best fix for the LEDs might be to simply cut
out a small circle of adhesive-backed semi-transparent filter material and
stick it on. I think I've seen an Avery-type label that would be perfect
(downside: you have to buy a bunch of labels). It might diffuse the light
nicely too.

The punch for punching paper to go in a 3-ring binder could do a clean job
on the circle and should be just right for size.

(I wouldn't want to touch the main display screen though)

[Elecraft] KX3 calibration questions - after EEINIT

After performing an EE INIT on the KX3 #797, per page 43 of the manual, I
understand you can avoid recalibration by restoring a saved config file via
the KX3 Utility.

However, my KX3 is showing some odd behavior with the power level setting
(resets to 0.0 W upon changing ATU MD between auto/bypass) that appears to
be solved after an EE INIT, but comes back after reloading my saved config
file, so I'd like to simply do an EE INIT followed by a manual restore my
Menu settings to my liking (CW mode B, etc...)

The manual states that if I don't restore from a saved config file, I need
to perform calibration.

However, it appears that most calibration values have been preserved: REF
CAL, gain/phase for KXFL3, TXCRNUL, TXSBNUL, etc.

I do notice that TX GAIN and TX BIAS have changed and that I'm not allowed
to enter those manually, but I can run the automated calibration.

So am I correct in thinking that all I need to do after EE INIT is run the
TX GAIN and TX BIAS automated calibrations?  Or are there dependencies I'm
not aware of that will invalidate other settings after doing gain/bias?

Brian - I think this is normal behavior for the KAF2 (mine does the same
thing anyway) - I think it's just displaying the time that was last viewed
and takes about a second to update, as you mentioned.

I'd rather see placeholders (such as --.--.-- or 'rtc' upon entry to that
display instead of invalid data, but it never really bothered me much.
Ideally maybe hh.mm.ss but I don't think the display can show an 'm'

[Elecraft] KX3: Power adjusts only in 0.2 W steps (where did 0.1 W go?)

When I adjust power on my KX3 (#797, MCU 1.12, DSP 0.94) the steps are +/-
0.2 W.  I would have sworn that in the past I could adjust power in 0.1 W
steps.

I've checked the manual but can't find any mention of this.

I'm probably doing something stupid, but any help would be appreciated.
 I've already performed EE INIT followed by KX3 Utility's restore
configuration.

The problem appears to be the 2.5 to 3.5 mm adapter. When the cable is
plugged into the adapter, the adapter seems to be shorting one of the
signals to ground.

Time to find a new adapter.

Sorry for the newbie/FAQ question but I've tried the Google searches,
forums, etc. and still come up without a solution.

I'm trying to find native Mac OS X panadapter software for my KX3 (not
interested in running Bootcamp, Parallels, VMWare, etc. at this time).

Tried DSP Radio and I get a mirror image, and when tuning around by
click/dragging the cursor, I can sometimes induce some kind of runaway
feedback loop... something's just not quite right.

It appears that lots of people have run into the mirror image problem, but
I haven't yet found an explanation.

Setup is simple:

(MacBook Pro audio port)---(3.5 mm stereo cable)---(3.5 to 2.5 mm
adapter)---(KX3 I/Q port)
