Jim,
I assume your using a balun with your
OFC antenna. I had a similar problem with my OCF that turned out to be the
balun. It was fine under low power but would not tune under high power.

Thanks,

Hi Knut,

On the contrary, I find most people are actually pretty interested in what
you're doing, and even in this age of global reach via phone/internet often
quite impressed by what communications can be achieved with a little radio (in
my case a KX3) and a wire antenna. In fact, I've gone so far as flying a SOTA
flag off my crappie pole when I'm operating encouraging folks to come over a
ask what I'm doing.

Hi again,

Not a bad idea. We were very successful in getting our four children
interesting in the outdoors. The oldest daughter and her husband are even
into backpacking in the back country (Algonquin park), something we never
got into. The other three are very good hikers, too.

I hate to be a wet blanket, but I am not sure if I understand the joy of
activating peaks on ham radio. How do other hikers react to this? I know I
am extremely annoyed by people gabbing on their cell phones on the trail. Is
ham radio that much different?

Re: [Elecraft] Mobile Radio Dreams & the KX2

2017-01-11 Thread Joe Moffatt
Are these the mobile mounts recommended in this thread? The Sidekick... or are
there other KX2 specific mounts?

I just bought a KX2/KXPA amp combo.

Yes, it is more expensive than other mobile options, but the better mobile rigs
out there have been discontinued, and for new gear, this really isn't that much
more expensive overall, especially when I also want to grab and go with my KX2
for travel/backpacking/portable.

Scott from SideKX also has a very nice mobile mount that the KX2 just snaps
into. It in turn has holes for the very popular AMP mounting solutions.

I'm using this with a KX2 to drive a KXPA100 in my RAV4 (the one Bill, AE6JV -
the O.P. passed on the road that made him think about mobile op's :-) It fits
perfectly just below my dashboard in the center console.

From my own experience, KY commands work but are clumsy, and there is a l limit
to how many characters can be sent with one command, The simple switching
circuit is quite easy to do and works extremely well,

All it takes is a 2N transistor with base connected to the proper pin (4 or
7) thru a 1.2K (1k -1.5K) Ohm resistor, The collector goes to the plug shield
and the emitter goes to the tip of the plug.

Plug this into the standard KUSB or standard serial cable.

Re: [Elecraft] THE EFFORT OF FIELD DAY

2016-06-27 Thread Joe Moffatt
For everyone that complains about kids and their X Boxes, etc, I have a simple
question for you. Have you ever asked them to participate with you in an event
like FD?

Guess what, some of the kids LOVE it. They like to be included and wanted.
Not all kids are that way, but there are more than you think. In fact, I have
found some of the more gadgety kids take a real interest in CW. They find
using a key to spell their name very intriguing.

Next time you have an event, ask them to come eat some free food and tinker
around with you.

I am happy to report that my 11 year old son, who plays on a PS4, a Xbox,

his first time.

He made 63 Qs with help from Dear Old Dad on the GOTA station. He is also
studying for his Technician class license.

He said over and over again, "Best weekend ever!" to both his mother and
me. He's already planning for next year.

BTW, we had two other youths at the site who have been hams for years now.
They both have very active lives outside of ham radio, but they still love
the hobby.

Don't give up on our youth! Ham radio still holds appeal!

Re: [Elecraft] New KX2

2016-05-18 Thread Joe Moffatt
I agree with you... I use my KX3 mobile, but it is a bit of a clumsy thing
(though I use it with only 15 watts, it works wonders).

I will add the 100 watt amp at some point. I don't need the 2 bands, so I
would be VERY interested in this rig.

Subject: Re: [Elecraft] New KX2

Hi All,

Well, those hoping for a K4 have been foiled again

Interesting that Elecraft chose to go with a reduced sized KX3 as their new
offering, but it does make some sense. There are several new, smaller QRP
rigs coming out these days, and possibly this may blunt the interest in
those to some extent. It's also just a tad bit irritating that the info we
are seeing, for the most part, is coming out of Japan!!! I don't quite get
that. Well, we are probably only a few days away from more info here.

As an owner of a KX3, I won't be moved too quickly to jump on this new
offering. However, those on the fence up to now may find this to be a more
appealing option. It's not yet clear what you are giving up--a couple of
watts apparently, and a couple of bands at both ends of the HF spectrum (160
and 6). I assume the PX3 will mate with the KX2, but not sure. Hopefully
the ATU option will be as good.

One thing that intrigues me somewhat is that the KX2, combined with the
KPAX100, might be a more versatile portable/mobile combination than the KX3
as a substitute. For mobile operating, the KX3 is a bit clumsy, but the
reduced size of the KX2 might make it work better--not sure.

Anyway, I just continue to be fascinated with what Elecraft comes up with.
They are fun to watch! I had sort of expected maybe something with a larger
display, and maybe a touch screen, but not yet! That may be a K4 feature,
whenever that comes about.

Joe,

Crucial difference is that the KX3 system is
modular and the barefoot KX3 can be used very
effectively battery operated for SOTA, camping and
the like. I suspect the IC-7300 was not designed
for power efficiency :-)

So I see them as a very different class of rig.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft Centric

2016-05-02 Thread Joe Moffatt
This is very true to me as well. One thing that I am seeing in several places
online right now is that the 7300 Icom is a big competitor to the KX3. A lot
of folks are saying that why spend the money for a KX3 when you can have a
panadapter, 100 watts, etc built in for much less money than the KX3/PX3/KPA100
combination.

This is relative to Elecraft and the KX3 in particular because this may turn
out to be a major competitor to the KX3 series, or not, but it is certainly a
relative discussion.

Anyhow, I don't mean to hijack the list, but other products do affect Elecraft
and their users.

Thankfully you don't get to make that call, and Eric has already laid
out the guidelines describing to what extent he considers pro/con
comments on other rigs to be appropriate for this list. For me, I find
it very valuable to understand how my K3 stacks up to other rigs as long
as such posts don't dominate the list. I prefer not to live in a silo.

[Elecraft] KX3 Solar backpacking power advice

2016-05-02 Thread Joe Moffatt
Hey guys...

I tried to search through the list to find what I wanted, but I can't find
exactly the info I think I need.

Anyhow, I am trying to figure out what to use for portable solar rechargeable
power while backpacking in the mountains. My typical trip will be 2-3 days, a
few hours a day operating primarily CW. 5 watts is fine for CW

Anyhow, I am curious for recommendations.

Thanks,

[Elecraft] KX3 used market

2016-02-17 Thread Joe Moffatt
I have a question for a friend who is looking for a KX3 used. Are older
serial numbers like the 2000s vs 7000s different hardware?

In other words, what on the used market should he look for, or is there much
difference. I know the K3 series are different, but I don't know about the
KX3s.

I have a very recent KX3, and he badly wants one now.

Hi Joe,

an easy and cheap starting point (weekend project) is the W2PM Mini-Diamond
loop connected thru W7IUV preamplifier and KD9SV front-end saver to Ext.RX
ant port of your K3.

It is just 1.5m square wire loop with loading resistor and feedline
transformer so it will fit anywhere even on balcony or inside of house
attic. ( but I recommend to place it as far from house noise as possible)

There is several other more powerful RX antennas like K9AY etc. but this is
cheap and easy to try.
Let me know if you want to send more instructions and help.

The best but more complicate solution which need more space and effort in
building is definitely 3-el. Hi-Z verticals array. It will fit to 15x15m
triangle lot and it will be hard to beat I guess.

[Elecraft] 160 meters RX antenna for K3 advice

2016-02-08 Thread Joe Moffatt
I am needing advice from any with a K3 for 160 receive antennas.

I just don't have room for Beverages, but I do have some backyard area. The
average noise floor here is about S7 ok my Inverted L.

Of course there are times it is much higher, but that is the norm.

I am wondering if a small loop, EWE, flag etc is what you guys would recommend.

I am looking for anyone with a relatively small space that could give advice.

What would you do or have you done?
Trying to get my 160 DXCC, and I'm half way there on 160.

I'll answer this myself... I just found via google another had the same problem.

In my case, the mode on that band was set for AFSK A , not FSK mode. The M

I bought the ATU and the Roofing Filter. I will be buying a PX3 eventually as
well as the amp just to have on my desk for a second radio... or at least I
think I'll do that.

Next is to buy the P3 and PX3 (for my K3 and this one). I have an Afedri SDR
connected to the K3 IF now running NAP3 and it is great, but the standalone P3
is what I really want.

You need a means of distributing all antennas among 2 radios, such as the WX0B
Six-Pak.
You need two band decoders, such as W9XT, for the BPFs/Six-Pak.
You need an audio box (Dunestar makes one) that can select:
left radio in both ears.
right radios in both ears.
left radio in left ear, right radio in right ear.
You should have a Winkey USB for 2 radio CW and all-mode PTT.
You also need one antenna per band, or two tribanders, or one tribander and a
triplexer.
You need two amplifiers.

That's all I have.

Unfortunately, the current implementation of SmartSDR (Flex 6K software)
does not provide an ADC overload indication like PowerSDR does so you would
just need to elicit the interference and see if attenuation alleviates the
receiver blocking.

I don't think you can necessarily make that conclusion without further
testing. If the K3/Orion transmitters had significantly more spurious tx
products than the Flex transmitters, that could also explain why the Flex
receivers seemed impaired compared to the K3/Orion. I'm not suggesting that
was the case, but you need more data to reach a conclusion.

[Elecraft] K3 FD report in high RF (K3 vs Flex 6xxx)

2015-06-29 Thread Joe Moffatt
Guys,

I just had the very fortunate (for me) experience of operating my K3 in a 4F
category with some good operators. My CW station was
My K3, and the other was an Orion 1. The 2 SSB stations were a Flex 6500 and
a 6300.

Due to space limitations, this is a very high RF environment. We used Dunestar
filters, and as much antenna separation as we could, but
It was what it was.

The K3 and Orion absolutely crushed the Flex's. The Flex's got destroyed by in
band interference from the CW guys, but we never heard them.
I thought that was a bit odd. Anyhow, to be fair, I didn't get to switch to
their antennas to see how different they would be.

But I will say this... numerous times during FD, the computers on the Flex's
locked up, usually forcing a reboot. That greatly upset the old school
Operators. Meanwhile, the K3 performed like a rock star, and we racked up
LOTS of CW QSOs on it... well over 1000.

Just wanted to say that the K3 is very dear to me, and until the Flex's can be
operated without a computer, there really isn't a comparison in
Real world operation. I realize mileage may vary, but I was VERY impressed
and proud of my K3 in this contest.

Mine is one of the last one's pre K3S and does have the new synth. I love it
dearly.

I think our total score for the effort was over 9000 QSO points, about 2600
QSO's combined between all.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 and KSYN3A in FD

2015-06-29 Thread Joe Moffatt
I had almost the exact same experience. A lot of times I have to remind
myself that the K3 is so good, I need to give more room in the normal passband
because I can't hear strong guys right next to me.

I have an Afedri SDR on my IF for my PAN, and I see that a lot.

Subject: [Elecraft] K3 and KSYN3A in FD

Had the opportunity to operate two, different K3 transceivers, both with
the new KSYN3A boards, during FD.

A few CW observations:
1. The only way I became aware of a station moving close to me was when my
rate dropped. A glance at the P3, or opening up the receiver bandwidth,
always revealed that somebody loud had moved in really close. Since not
everyone has K3 . . . my rate fell in what was QRM for other receivers.

2. The bands seemed really big. I was always able to quickly find a run
frequency when moving from another band or mode.

3. In spite of rainstorms for about 23 hours of FD, the bands seemed quiet
and lightning crackles were quite subdued.

I'm sure that these observations are routine for experienced K3 users.
For somebody who is still trying to decide, or is still feeding the piggy
bank, the K3 has one H3LL of a receiver--especially when equipped with the
KSYN3A board.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Enhancement

2015-04-03 Thread Joe Moffatt
I am.doing that exactly with a $250 afrdri SDR and an audio mixer panel.

I don't miss my flex at all!

And let me just tell you, you will not get K3 performance unless you buy a 6700
flex at almost double the cost of a k3 with sub Rx.

I have been an avid flex user for 3 years but the K3 is far superior in a lot
of ways. Listening fatigue, afx, filtering that is a brick wall, and quick
tunability make the K3 a much better option for me.

Don't get me started on operating system lockups. I am an IT consultant by
profession with thousands and thousands of support hours under by belt, and
even I have occasional problems.

When my PC dies, or gets a reboot, my K3 is still going strong. That has
tremendous value to me.

One misfire in a major contest and you'll wish for the standalone K3. I know
from experience!

Joe
PS. I think the Flex radios are awesome. I have nothing against them or
their company and they have provided a tremendous resource for ham radio. I
just think the K3 is a better value for the money.

This is possible using SDR software with an I/Q feed from the K3 IF.
Check out the LP Pan unit and NaP3 SDR software.

This is also possible with many stand alone SDR receivers like SDR-IQ,
Elad, etc. Software like SpectraVue (SDR-IQ) or HDSDR (generic) can
link the SDR receiver to the K3 IF frequency. Many of the stand alone
SDR receivers will provide better performance, greater image rejection
and wider bandwidth than possible with LP-Pan/NaP3.

Bruce also asked, short of having a second subreceiver in the K3 (which
I do not have) - When operating Split, I know you can quickly switch
between DX and calling stations by holding the REV button. The problem
of course is you can only hear one or the other. Is it within reach of a
simple software enhancement from our heroes at Elecraft to route these
two audio signals to the left and right headphone channels from VFO A
 and B?

 Answer:

This is possible using SDR software with an I/Q feed from the K3 IF.
Check out the LP Pan unit and NaP3 SDR software. You will also need a
suitable sound card with stereo inputs and outputs. This software
creates two SDR receivers within the computer, which can then be fed to
the computer's sound card for playback. You plug your headphones into
 the computer's sound card output.

The better the sound card, the better this will work. The wider the
bandwidth of the sound card, the greater the width of the spectrum you
can display. The software is free. LP-PAN costs $250. The recommended
ASUS USB sound card costs $65.

What are you using for software? Do you have the interface's

I have the audio cables, and everything works fine for AFSK PSK31.

If everything works normally for PSK31, you should be able to use
the same configuration *except* you select AFSK A for RTTY in the
K3.

That should work with MMTTY or the MMTTY interface built into the
Digital Interface of N1MM Logger.

 Joe,
What are you using for software? Do you have the interface's
 built, or bought?
 See: http://www.aa5au.com/rtty/ and: http://www.rttycontesting.com/

I do lots of RTTY contesting using a K3 and WriteLog for software. N1MM
 also works good.

Grant,

No ideology here, just the brutal facts of business.

If people do not like the feature set of a product, people will not purchase
it.

If Elecraft does not appeal to the market segment that buys a radio for the
features they offer, they will soon begin to dwindle and ultimately die.
Then there are zero resources for anything.

I personally think a better CW code reader would be a better use of
resources compared to AM.

Do you think new buyers of radios are more interested in AM performance, or
the ability of the radio to decode CW (for those that don't know CW). Of
those two categories of buyers, which one has a larger number of people?

A company (or senator, or representative, or president, or any elected
official) MUST focus their efforts, or fall prey to competition that does
focus on the majority. If not, they perish.

Technology, while important, is not the only factor. There are more CW
operators in the world than there are AM'ers. That fact makes Elecraft's
decision easier. Focus on CW as opposed to AM. They did this very same
thing with the recent release of the synth. The new synth makes little
difference on SSB (and AM for that matter) and has it's impact on CW. BUT
not that much of an impact on a band that is not crowded. It only shines on
a crowded CW band like Sweepstakes, 160 meter contests, and the like.

My interest is CW, without a computer. Hence my decision to go with the K3.
I had a TS-480, and it worked great and met my CW needs. There was no real
reason to change to a K3, as for my style of operation, the 480 was good.
But the 480 did not have a panadaptor or a roofing filter, that was
important to me. So, Kenwood lost a customer, and Elecraft picked one up.

Those are the realities of the market. If Kenwood loses to many customer,
the will go the way of the Globe's, the Vikings, the Drakes, the Eicos, the
Heathkits, the Hallicrafters, the Collins. The list goes on and on and on.

BTW, I am an old phart too.

I don't know who you consider to be the big 3. Some oh-not-so-old
Kenwood radios are excellent on AM. The Orion I/II is truly an excellent AM
transmitter (I owned 3 of them, and even now they aren't exactly shabby on
any other mode). The Flex-most-anything can be broadcast quality (perhaps
you should seek one out).

There is a large, vibrant, and growing AM community (who's technology is far
younger than CW). Universally, they dis the K3 for its poor (relatively) AM
performance, and avoid it (in some quarters with great disdain) for that
reason. Frankly, I'm getting too old to keep hauling around a Globe King
500 and a Globe Champion 300.

Given the K3 is an SDR -- there is no reason (well, other than mode bias
perhaps and a few (100/1000) lines of code that it could not also meet the
needs of the AM community and become a popular radio there.

I get exceedingly tired at being scolded for being an old f*rt, simply for
enjoying an operating mode that is younger than CW. (And, by the way, I like
CW too, and SSB, and various digi modes from time to time).

There are many groups of hams involved in many different aspects of the
hobby. I'd respectfully suggest we might want to be a bit more respectful of
ALL, even if they don't fit with our personal ham radio ideology. But
that's another subject for a different venue. .. :(

Elecraft users are the benefactor of their focus.

They do NOT need to focus resources on AM.

For us old-timers here, if R.L. Drake focused on AM when they designed

It will be interesting to hear from someone who has done that... but I put
two new synth boards in the K3 of W9FAM, and he is THRILLED at being able
to run QRQ without having to be in the QRQ mode, thus being able to use
RIT, without degradation of the CW his K3 is putting out.

For him that is important every moment he is on the air... He realizes he
may never be aware of receive improvement, but knows the upgrade was well
worth it.

In my case, I seldom go over 30 wpm, so I did not need the upgrade the way
he did, but I am still glad I did it. I may never know how differently my
rig actually performs, but it seems quieter. I realize that could be
just because I want to justify the upgrade, but I am a very happy camper
regardless.

Dick,

The sensitivity number is incorrect because the K3 Rob tested didn't have its
S-meter and AGC calibrated. He's going to re-test this after the unit is
calibrated. We tested a few K3s with new synths in our lab, and all of them had
sensitivity very close to the first K3 Rob tested.

On the contrary, the new synth reduces noise considerably over the old (as much
as 20 dB lower noise at a 2-kHz offset), which only benefit all measurements.

Check all the coaxial cables that plug into the boards and front panel.
Make sure they go the right places. I would also check the way you have

There are a couple of ways to do this depending on your options.

is poor. This is on a known good antenna/coax.

Anyhow, just wondering what to check. I haven't set the REF OSC yet because
I can't get a strong enough signal to do it.

Ideas? I thought I was sailing along smoothly.

 Thanks,

 joe
