Would you like to try the latest development Emacs,
from CVS on savannah.gnu.org, and see if it has the same problem?
I never did that in the past, so I cannot ensure you I did it
the perfect way. So that you can judge by yourself, this is what
I did:
On top of these default packages
After that, I could successfully launch a newly built Emacs app:
GNU Emacs 22.0.92.1 (i686-pc-linux-gnu, GTK+ Version 2.10.6)
of 2007-01-16 on mundaneum
But I still get exactly the same problematic behavior with the
colors that are not displayed anymore,

I just installed Ubuntu Edgy 6.10, and still experiences
problems with `color-theme' (versions 6.5.4, 6.5.5 and
6.6.0) under Emacs Snapshot (GTK).
