Presentation:

Compliance with European Environmental Legislation

Presenter: Michael Pfeifer, Ph.D, PE

The European Union has enacted a directive on the restriction of
the use of certain hazardous substances (RoHS) in electrical and electronic
equipment. This directive requires the elimination of hexavalent chromium,
mercury, cadmium, lead, and certain flame retardants from electronics sold
in member states of the European Union by July 1, 2006. Additionally, the
directive on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) requires
producers and/or distributors to have systems in place to take back
components and materials for reuse or recycling.

The first part of the presentation will cover the main points of
these directives. The presentation will then cover the uses of the
restricted materials in electronics, the alternatives available to replace
the restricted metals, and materials reporting compliance. The remainder of
the presentation will be devoted to a discussion of some of the
manufacturing, test, and reliability issues associated with the elimination
of lead from electronics.
