Oh, sorry :( adding AllowSupplementaryGroups to the /etc/clamd.conf file fixed it. Not sure why it was getting access denied if the user clamav was added to the mail group (which owns the directories and files), but adding the AllowSupplementaryGroups, fix it. Thanks again for your time and
