I am installing Mandrake 7.1 (single disk version) for a friend, and am
having trouble with the X config. He has a Sony GDM-1960 fixed frequency
monitor (H54, V66 max res 1200X). I can not use the supplied XFdrake
because it does not allow custom monitors, and when I config using
xf86config, I
in the /usr/src/linux-2.2.whatever that came with your mandrake they
should have a file called something like deafultconfig -- whatever, it
doesn't matter. I always do the config in X and then out to terminal
for the complle. Anyway, from a terminal window in that directory, type
"make xconfig"
I downloaded and installed the trial last night after reading about it
HERE! I have reset the memory used for the Windows I loaded onto a
virtual disk to 96Mb and configured the modem and ports using the
configuration menu. (And I tell you my heart was skipping beats when I
first had to
Need a LOT of memory, then it runs great

I've always done 'make dep make bzImage make modules make
modules_install' then when complete I run 'make install' which is what
places the System.map file for one. Is that what you did?
Well see there you go -- I've never in my LIFE finished with
I tried both linking the system.map and simply moving it to the boot
partition as well

After compiling the kernel did you:
copy your System.map-xx.xx.xx to /boot , and
rm /boot/System.map
ln -s /boot/System.map-xx.xx.xx /boot/System.map

I ran lilo and rebooted, and the system actually ran at first, just
pulled up that error message about twenty times during the boot. It
only stopped working at all when I tried to manually copy the System.map
file from the source code

You don't run X when you're telnetted in.
OK, so I compiled the new kernel yeasterday, so I could try out the new Linux
Diskless Terminal version (they recommend using 2.3.somethingoranother, but I
figured the 2.4 would be safer). Anyway, I had no problem with the compilation,
added it using linixconf as I always have done ( I recompile

Speaking out of the side of my head here: there's a program called Drive2Drive
that you can use. Shareware or freeware, I don't know. Boot on a floppy and
specify the new drive. I used it once a while ago, but brain dumped after.
Sorry no good details

I have been unable to get the Blade3D (AGP) to work under some hardware.
For instance, it will not config at all with my FIC socket 7 board, but
can get it to work intermittently
