Actually, the guru is only a guide and it has been stated here that one must walk the path alone ultimately. This is no way means that while one is with the Guru, the evolution is not in full force until one is walking the path on their own but just the opposite.

A guru is the same as the disciple except the maya is no longer there. The Guru guides one to remove this maya, but leaves the disciple to live thier life, make their own choices and then reap the consequences of these choices. Hridaya
