Does anyone have sound working on an HP DC7800 (x86-64)?
If so, was any modprobe trickery needed?

No. It has always worked for me. F9 x86_64 fully updated
(whatever this means these days :-) ).
Check:
Is sound disabled in bios (if this is possible)?
Does it work if you log in as a different user? As root?

You'll have to check the mixer settings. It is always a nightmare to
find the right place(s) to turn up the volumes.
