Marilyn,
Your thought about being glad you didn't know when you first got her is
EXACTLY the way I felt about my dear Tigger. He was near death when we found
him - we thought due to starvation, and he quickly bounced back after proper
care for a while. We also may not have kept him had we known he was FeLV
positive, and I would have missed out on 5-1/2 years of the best kitty
ever!! I told myself I would never ever get that attached to a cat or any
animal ever again. But now I'm head over heels in love with our little
Topaz, who just happens to look and act just like Tigg, and she has also
tested negative for FeLV, so I'm hoping her test is accurate.

I have no idea. Was the test result wrong initially? My current vet thinks
she was born with it or had it when we found her at 2 months. I would
advise all cats be tested; people need to know if their cat needs extra
care, but I am glad we did not know. Had we known, we would not have kept
this little kitten, who only had the use of three legs, and who was still
the fastest cat I have ever seen. She literally glided around the house,
scooting on her "useless" front leg. It would have been too risky to expose
our other cats to a cat with the virus. (I know thinking has changed on
this, but this was 7 years ago. Our other four cats are all neg.) We would
have missed out on all her sweetness. The poet had it right, "Better to have
loved and lost "

Just wanted to give you kind souls an update on my sweet Destiny. I helped
her cross the bridge last week, just a few weeks after her diagnosis. The
vet initially thought she had a nasal tumor, but tests were negative. On
this visit it was clear she had deteriorated in a week and had the vet was
able to see the tumor. The vet said steroids would shrink it, but it would
come roaring back. Her head was so swollen that one eye was shut. The best
thing we could do was let her go while she was still purring.

>From onset to end there was nothing we could have changed with any knowledge
or treatment. She had tested neg. for FeLv and had the vaccine and
boosters. Our other cats are negative and she never went outdoors. Destiny
enjoyed good health until very recently when her respitory infection turned
out to be a tumor. Nevertheless, it really helped us to have the support of
this community and know there was somewhere we could go for advice.

Thank you all and may you all have better success and hug your kitty
tonight. Destiny was a peacemaker. I never saw her hiss once, but I saw
her sit as close as she could to our cats who hissed at her, until they
finally were won over. The world needs more people like my special cat . .

I have learned from Annie and others that I need to check out every
possibility, not just the obvious. Had I done so, we might have caught the
kidney problem in time. My vet has since done some research and found that
with FELV cats, kidney problem are one of the first signs, just sorry that
Annie had to suffer and die because we did not know that earlier.

Re: [Felvtalk] Destiny

2017-06-24 Thread Marilyn Knapp Litt
The record does not specify the type of test done initially. The most
recent test was done in house and a drop of blood was put in a solution to
change color. It was very hard to see that it was positive. The vet thought
it was negative, but a tech pointed out a faint blue line that meant
positive. I suppose it is possible that this test was incorrect. She died
of a very aggressive tumor. In looking over her records, I recalled her as
always being healthy, but she did have a clostridium overgrowth once. I
think her vet would agree with the positive test results. I think her blood
count was consistent with FeLv.

I don't know what to say about retesting. It is hard when your cat hates the
vet. I suppose I would treat the cat as positive, as far as giving
supplements, and rush to the vet at any sign of illness. With my healthy
cats I give them a couple of days to get better if they have the sniffles.
I would not do that with an Felv cat.

Thank you, and everyone, for your kind words.

Marilyn

Marilyn,

I am so sorry for your loss. I know how difficult it must be.

I am curious though about what type of Felv test you had done. There is the
Elisa test which is usually done in house and the IFA test which is done via
a blood test at a lab and is supposed to be more accurate. I have read
that there are false positives with the Elisa test. My cat tested positive
with Elisa but negative with the IFA test. I know I should probably take
her back and have her retested, (as it has been more than 6 months) but she
is doing well and she gets really stressed by trips to the vet.

The world needs more people like my special cat . .

Re: [Felvtalk] Destiny

2017-06-24 Thread Marilyn Knapp Litt

2017-06-24 Thread Corinne Shank
Marilyn,

I am so sorry for your loss. I know how difficult it must be.

I am curious though about what type of Felv test you had done. There is the
Elisa test which is usually done in house and the IFA test which is done via a
blood test at a lab and is supposed to be more accurate. I have read that
there are false positives with the Elisa test. My cat tested positive with
Elisa but negative with the IFA test. I know I should probably take her back
and have her retested, (as it has been more than 6 months) but she is doing
well and she gets really stressed by trips to the vet.
