I solved the water situation with a Pioneed water fountain. They love the
water movement, it filters the water and if yoiu add a few ice cubes to bob
around, they really like it. They drink much more than they did with water
bowls.

Re: [Felvtalk] Food, Bad Jokes, Good Vets

2017-03-16 Thread Lorrie
Hi Robert,

No problem about the joke. I was also joking when I said your remark
almost gave me a heart attack.

Re: FOOD - None of my 13 rescued cats like the grain free foods
either. They also don't like Friskies canned, but I worry about too
much dry food. It easier to feed, but they need more moisture so they
get Fancy Feast once a day (expensive with 13 cats) but thats all
they want. The rest of the time they get dry food, but I cannot free
feed as I have 4 who are overweight. So they all get fed individually
and I've discovered many of them like a bit of water on their dry
food, which is good because this way I'm sure they are getting enough
liquids.

As for myself I eat as healthy as I can. Junk food actually turns my
stomach now as does fried food. I've been eating this way for about
30 years now, and I really love veggies, whole grains, and very little
meat. What meat I eat is always braised or baked. It must be working
as my blood work is perfect at age 84, but I still got arthritis and
it's VERY painful. I figure I'll live to be 100 and be in pain the
entire time :-( Well I have to outlive all these cats so I'll deal
with it.

Re: [Felvtalk] Food, Bad Jokes, Good Vets

2017-03-11 Thread dlgegg
I was not realy going to report you for cruelty, you are in this group so I
know better. Just giving you a rough time.
re:food
I have a rough time getting my pride to eat canned food. I mix it with hot
water to make it smell better. They drink the broth and leave the meat. Can't
figure that one out. They do not like fish flavored food, not even when I fix
fresh wild caught salmon or tuna.
Harley especially wants to eat everything I eat, it just might be something he
likes. I have to cook for all of us, take out for him and then season with
garlic for myself. So I stick with Blue Buffalo duck, red meat or rabbit.
They attack the bag before I can get it open. I used to feed Hills Science
Diet until they were one of the companies caught in the big food scandal that
was killing off dogs, cats and some seniors who could not afford regular food.
Plus it had grains and most of my pride are allergic to them, especially soy.
They were constantly vomiting as soon as they ate it. A waste of expensive
food. I also have 2 water fountains (one in each end of the house) and they
are now drinking more water, especially when I add a few ice cubes that bounce
around in the water. We like to watch them and try to catch them.
Since they eat the food, it is cheaper in the long run because it does not go
to waste. The only time anyone vomits is when Harley pounce on them right after
eating. His mission in life is to aggrevate everyone in the house. He is the
only one who goes outside, catches a mouse, schrew or vole and then spends his
time sleeping on the deck. Dee and Annie go out for a sunny nap which is good
because they get their vitamin d. Homie, a former feral has taken a sudden
dislike to outside. I think she has a good thing going and does not want to
loose it. On sunny days I make her go out with me for her vitamin k.

Re  FOOD:  This is argued perpetually even among vets and animal
nutritionists... There is the " raw only" camp the don't EVER let
your cat touch grain camp... The ONLY wet food camp... the Use Multiple
sources of protein camp( don't stay with the same food camp vs...stay
with the same food camp)ad nauseum.. I am personally an
excellent human example of how genetics influences health... I am a
walking heart attack ( apart from my tendency to like exercise and keep
somewhat active).. On a limited budget now...and ,even when I had money,
so seldom home.. I have been eating " wrong" my entire life.. Meanwhile
a recent Cardiac Vessel Calcium test found my vessels 100% clear ( MD
says I'm good for 10 more years minimum)... 3 friends that have eaten
"right" for decades have recently been Dx'd with heart issues...
Unfair...yes... but fact.    *** The only thing I can somewhat control
that concerns me a lot is making sure that my cats get enough fluid so I
try to be sure that they ( he) get some wet food daily in addition to
the water he drinks Don't know that it's a deal breaker but it makes
ME feel better.
I also subscribe to keeping grains to a minimum since cats are obligate
carnivores... I doubt that grains are going to kill them but why force
their bodies to learn to digest something they were not constructed to
utilize unless you really cannot afford better quality cat food... When
my family had the most cats ( when I was young) there WERE no such
specialty cat foods and I had a few VERY healthy cats ( all of them were
indoor/outdoor kitties so some were taken before their time) who all ate
the same garbage cat food ( puss'n boots from a can...later tender
vittles.. and other high grain content foods) and lived to 20 years
old...  In the shelter our cats are all fed the same diet
initiallysome thrive... others develop diseases within months on
Science Diet ( their non specialty mid range general cat food)... So...
I buy the best food I can afford ( and that they will eat) and hope for
the best... currently my boy ( formerly my boys) is on grain free
Natural Balance Pea and Venison ( not cheap) and Friskies Pate in the
evening ( my guy will NOT eat any of the high end canned food I offer
him and I went through a year of spending LOTS of money trying
everything so that my sick cat Yogi would eat wet food that had some
medicine mixed in... Baby Food at 109.00 a night... chicken, pork etc...
that I cooked myself) Neither would touch " quality" wet food...  Now my
remaining guy LOVES friskies pate and I LOVE that it costs 50cents a
can!!!...

that diet( unless it's particularly horrible)  is going to make THE
difference in a cats health and to not beat yourself up if you can't
afford the BEST OF THE BEST... Most of the human population cannot
afford to eat Doctor recommended diets unless they have fruit trees in
their back yards and a year round vegetable garden... and if you also
want to go organic...Hell...why not just buy a second house!!!
LAST on the listVets.   I really like the idea of posting the names
and whereabouts of Vets that we are all pleased with but MUCH more
interested in learning who the vets are that are willing to prescribe
Winstrol...  I like my vet just fine but she's close minded about
Winstrol and that concerns me no end...
