Please close this issue. upon further investigation it
turns out to be an issue with mencoder. the actual
error was with audio buffers being overrun and causing a
shutdown. adjusting switches rather than using defaults
seems to have

not shared with ffmpeg i think.

thanks for the info so far. since I have no clue about programming or compiling,
