Kiwi,
I would like to try spinning in the grease but I have no carder or
anything. Can I use purchase raw fleece and just spin it?
Yes this is how I do it basically although I also often flick card the
staples open as it makes it flow better.
If it the fleece wasn't overly dirty or mucky

Hi all, I have a bit of a strange question, but I bet that it's one
that many of us will be dealing with in the months and years to
come... I want to be clear that I am not complaining about the
security increase at all, I just need some help with creative problem

I flew recently and nail clippers are not allowed, they will be thrown away.
This applies to domestic and international. Don't know about sewing needles.

Hi all, I am enjoying reading about where people like to spin. Spinning
and relaxation definately go hand in hand.
I have an Ashford Traveler which I have spun on for many years. I have
reached the point where I really wish I didn't have to splice and weave
ends when I knit. So I'm
I just booked a flight yesterday. In addition to scissors and knitting
needles, I have a friend who had her fingernail clippers and eyelash
curlers confiscated. AS a habitual airport knitter, I am a bit
flustered. I hoping a drop spindle will be OK.
As for cutting yarn without an implement,
Corie,
Check with your local quilt shop, I have a thimble with a small blade on
the side which cuts thread nicely, it should be sharp enough for
needlepoint thread.

OK, folks, please stop flaming me privately!
I tried to make clear that I am NOT complaining about security
increases, and I am trying to find a way to work within them. I want
for everyone to be safe, and I do NOT want to cause problems. Several
years ago I took at look at the scissors I
Ginnie,
They confiscated eyelash curlers??? What are they afraid of that one might curl
them too much?? I am all for security, but that is a little ridiculous, don't
you think? If the airline industry is going to survive, they better start using

Unfortunately, I can see

Well, it would be helpful to know before we get on the plane what of our
knitting/fiber equipment is likely to be confiscated. Has anyone actually
had knitting needles taken away? I wonder if they could object to the old
nylon circulars.

From what I've experienced over the years, yarns that have been set in any
way by washing/wetting after spinning do not ply as well as those that you
ply directly after spinningand I;ve tried it with Merino to get a very
uneven and unbalanced ply. I would suggest plying begfore wetting. If

Hi Corie,
Clover makes a necklace type thing that's a round medallion with little
notches around the edges for cutting thread/yarn. It works really
well. I got mine for about $7.00 in the notions dept. at Michael's -
before 9/11. It looks like jewelry and has no points or blades -
should
Clover makes a little round metal disk, about 1 across, with little
teeny tiny blades set down within the disk--I cannot see how one could
cut oneself, even accidentally, with it. It may be considered okay by
security personnel; I simply don't know. Mine hangs on a chain around
my neck when I
I wanted to share an idea that was sent to me directly that I thought
was wonderful... Using the cutter on a dental floss holder... I
have just tried it out, and it works beautifully on both cotton and
wool, up to worsted weight. I have my doubts that bulky would work
very well, but it
On another list, someone said that Clover makes a thread cutter that can't
possibly be used for anything except cutting thread and, more important,
looks like a pendant.
Make sure that you check with *all* the airlines, going and coming, about
whether they will discard your needles. And don't
I am flying on Continental from Tampa through Houston to Albuquerque tomorrow

small wooden niddy-noddy, and a knitting project which consists of a

I have a country spinner. It is an older model (has an upright bar in
center front and the treadle on the right side of that, which is
inconvenient - what good is the big treadle if you can't get both your feet
on it?). I like the huge capacity and the huge orifice that doesn't require
a hook.
I recently realized that I also wanted a wheel with greater capacity for
plying - also, the 2 wheels I had weren't as portable as I wanted - so
portability was desirable. Contemplated the Country Spinner. Did research,
called around, and finally ended up getting a Louet with two jumbo bobbins
Fingernail clippers aren't allowed? I guess I lack imagination, but I can't
think of a way to use them to hijack a plane. I figured that knitting
needles would be out when they said no plastic table knives would be
allowed. Knitting needles could be a danger and it bothered me before that

I suspect that Ben Franklin would laugh at the thought that banning

I suspect that most of the talk about banning certain items, including

Thanks to everyone who offered suggestions for getting grease out of
spun yarn. I finally discovered the source of the problem.
Apparently some grease had gotten into the orifice of my wheel.
Darned if I know how that happened! And what worked in getting it
out of the yarn was Zout,
With the current crack down on security at airports, I expect to no

I would get a pair of inexpensive scissors that close up for travel. At

I too wanted a wheel to ply 2 bobbins of an Ashford Traditional onto. What
I did was get the jumbo flyer for my traddy. There was enough room on the
