I see the same error building g77 on my Powermac dual G5. I have
Darwin 6.8.5 installed (still waiting on my copy of Panther). This
is with the 10.2-gcc3 fink rsync and using the Aug 2003 gcc-3.3
updater from connect.apple.com.
One other question. Does anyone with g77 3.4 compiled

It appears that the failures of building g77 are only
happening on G5 powermacs. I looked over the gcc testsuite
mailing list but it doesn't look as if any builds are being
done with G5's yet.
