this time on ppc(G5) OSX 10.5.1:

plplot_octave.o -L../../src/.libs -lplplotd -L/sw/lib/python2.5/config
-L/sw/lib/freetype219/lib
For the record plplot 5.8.0-1003 updated fine on my macbook
Intel OSX 10.5.1.

would remember having done an explicit fink install octave-atlas
You are assuming too much!-(3 system at a time is more I can handle
with gcc game in parallel, I know I should have a notebook and record
what I do, but so far I have
That was it! after rebuilding octave, plplot rebuilt without
further problem.

priori rebuilding a pkg changes nothing, let me explain here
