I got things going again by picking that gtk+2 selection, another group of
libraries, and then a few individual applications by 'install'ing them, one
by one. Eventually the updateall worked.

I'm glad that you got the compile to work - I'd had my own slew of problems.
Eventually I gave up and found the installation package and just installed
the binary. When I start it up, it brings up my Gnome session and appears to
run fine.
I'm not sure I understand what advantages there are to
