After installing Panther, Apple's X11, Xcode, and the X11 SDK, I set about updating my fink installation. I downloaded fink-0.16, did inject.pl, then selfupdate. This broke at one point, but manually installing fink-prebinding allowed it to complete. Then I typed update-all and went off for lunch (after ensuring that all of the packages were successfully downloaded).

When I got back, I found that it had built xfree86 packages, but then was unable to finish installing them. Oh NO! I've never used fink's xfree86. And now Apple's won't work either, complaining about library incompatibilities. Apparently fink managed to install just enough of its own stuff to mess up the installation. And it won't let me remove any of it either, because of all the dependencies involved....

Is there a solution short of uninstalling everything and going back to square 1? This all worked fine on two of my machines, but of course it broke on my main desktop machine, where xemacs is a basic condition of life.
