I downloaded and installed the software in demo mode (no Flex Radio yet, but thinking of asking my Santa for one for Christmas). PowerSDR launches, and the display looks as expected. However, when I tap the start button, the display grays out and an error PowerSDR has stopped working comes up.

This isn't a software installation issue. The demo version of PowerSDR relies on your PC's sound card to provide the D/A conversions needed by PowerSDR. Some PC sound cards are not compatible and will throw these error when starting. This is not a problem when you have an actual FlexRadio
