Why do you make your decision on a "newer" computer? There are LOTS of options
to continue using your 5K. Neal will build you a "screamer" or you can go
cheap with a refurb on amazon or eBay with W7 and put in a FW card. Don't give
up on your 5K . It is still a GREAT radio.

Question was asked about using a Flex 3000 with an ALS 600 amp. Keying some
3Ks with the front mike connection results in a full power spike regardless of
the drive level set in PowerSDR. Some have suggested dialing in some latency
or delay to avoid this getting to the Amp. I can't verify if
This may have been covered before but if you are having RFI issues with the 5K
and are using the 8 pin mike connection the problem may be that pin 7 is solder
bridged to the shield in the Heil Sound's Stealth 8-pin Foster microphone
connector. The shield should NOT be used as the negative
Actually...It does not!. I absolutely agree that a fast CPU with 4 or more
megs of memory are Preferred but certainly not a requirement. I successfully
run my Flex 3000 with both an old HP laptop with a built in 4 pin firewire and
HP desktop with built in 6 pin.The desktop has and
Some amp instructions caution against tuning at low power and then increasing
drive without fine tuning the settings. In contrast it is generally OK to
reduce drive to lower power after tuning at a higher level. Using the 10 watt
tune' on the Flex radios as an initial step works OK but best
The HP ProBook 4525s is available from several sources on Amazo @ about
$400.. Good results here with both the Flex 3K and 5K. K3PD

K4AVU makes them at a fair price. (
half the price of the Ameritron 704) Be sure to tell him it's for a 5K
since his standard unit has to be modified since the Darlington switch has
different characteristics from a relay like in the 3K which has a 2 amp at
220VDC. rating. K3PD
bought mine from the Chinese guys on amazon or ebay for 99 cents plus abut 5
bucks shipping which took about 10 days. They fit exactly on my Pioneer
headset and look to be the same of better quality than the originals. K3PD.

Yes, it IS overkill but it sure is FUN! I have the 17 tube model and it does
double duty entertaining my grand kids shooting unweighted tennis balls without
a line attached up into where did it go? Of course EVERYBODY wants to shoot

Flex 5K manual recommends using an outboard circuit to key an amp since the
keying lines use a Darlington transistor switch rated at 400 ma @50 volts.

Ed was kind enough to give me the quick tour of the new Flex Headquarters

I have found that the 8 pin connector even when wired per the manual is
more susceptible to RFI than the 1/4 rear connection for whatever reason.
Even though this is a balanced input it will work just fine with and
unbalanced microphone provided that the mike boost is checked in the menu.
Brian, you do not have to be using W2IHY products for him to make you a
cable. He has always responded quickly to a phone call or e-mail. His
customer service is excellent. KC5PD

The rear 1/4 mike input seems much less prone to RFI issues than using the
eight pin connector on the front. Also use the rear RCA for PTT. Be
sure to check the box for mike gain in the main menu or you might find that
you have to run a lot of gain on the radio screen slider. Adjust the
CK to make sure that tune power setting in menu is still set to about 10
watts and is indicated on main screen. Also try using atu menu rather
than tune on radio screen. KC5PD
