Been using my Flex 1500 almost exclusively for serious QRP contesting for several years. Life got better when I replaced an ageing HP that ran 20 per cent CPU to an I7 stripped down PC that runs around 2 per cent with the Flex.
I either use an external Idiom Press memory keyer or setup Writelog CW memories. Everything works fine but...in high speed CW exchanges the T/R switching time delayed by latency cuts into the confirmation reply of the station that's running so I miss the T or TU of the TU and then his call. In SSB you don't notice the slight latency although if you've got a second non-SDR receiver running you can hear the slight delay. For regular speed CW contests (22 to 25 wpm) there's really no problem but if the contester is running at 30 wpm or higher the loss of time is noticeable and makes it problematic running QRP to know for certain the contact was completed. Seriously considering a KX3 and the external amp (for those contests when conditions suck) which will work on the Flex and has a built-in ATU. The Kenwood TS-590 isn't off my list either.
