basically the same thing, that since there was no dedicated FireWire

I doubt that Linux would be more efficient that windows. Linux does
benefit by having less code bloat but in other areas it doesn't do much

Linux has one thing Microsoft lacks that that is the availability of a
real time kernel. This is superior to the current situation with
Microsoft. Scheduling is a different story. I have not clue about that.
