But notice that Simon's first message was specific to USB3 and Firewire. It

More than that, you have EIGHT channels

Hi Neal,
It should not because it would be a waste of resources for
absolutely no reason.
SDR-14 and SDR-IQ use USB 1.0 and they can do something between
160 kHz and 230 kHz depending on hardware and operating system.
So this is telling me that if a person has a laptop or desktop with working
Firewire ports, keep it and pray it works for very long time. Also for back
up it might be wise to purchase a PCI firewire card and a good Epress card
and PCMIA card. And I do not believe there is a Firewire to USB
kicking.

The salesman is partially right. Where he is wrong is that he knows nothing
of the specific application of utilizing a FLEX-5000

I don't believe the 1500 is USB 2.0 but rather 1.1
Will Flex be offering 5000/3000 equivalents with USB3 connectivity? My
1500 is a beautiful little USB2 package, so it looks like the heavy
lifting software wise has already been (is already being) done. We
surely don't want to end up tied

Firewire is far from being dead in the pro audio world. Apple did not include
a Firewire port on what I call the middle MacBook Pro series, however, in the
next and following editions, the FW 800 port is indeed back. MANY people
complained. The Mac Pro destop comes with 4 FW 800 ports

I'm sure there will be Firewire support available in one form or another
for several more years. The problem is with laptop choices. If you
look at most of the new inexpensive laptops on the market, most of them
have neither Firewire support nor an expansion port to plug a Firewire
card
I think the question is market demand. Laptops today are separating into 4
segments:
1. Sofa surfers who are likely to migrate to tablets once they come down in
price. These are netbook users currently.
2. Students (tablet typing isn't an option)
3. Business travelers who need reliable and rugged

I have to agree with Neal, cheap is not where you will find PCIe and FireWire
ports. I did just purchase a Lenovo Idealpad 15 with a i3 and a PCIe slot,
for a friend for $478, runs PowerSDR pretty well (just had to try it)
The higher ends still have FW ports, audio folks are still

Better yet, maybe flex radio will engineeer and sell a retrofit or you return
your flex 5000a to the factory for the upgrade. I also believe that firewire
will be a legacy technology and end of life very soon. Hopefully something is
in the pipeline. 73
