That does help my frame rates (the worst case rate went from 8FPS
to 14), but I still have the structures being drawn. What I would like
is something like --disable-structures (I looked and couldn't find one).

and I added it to a new (80Mb) package that I am uploading right
now.
I had to re-login to my old machine to finish transferring some files. Here are the
frame rates that the old Mac was giving (it is a single processor G4 running at 867
MHz, with 1 GB RAM, GeForce3 with 64 MB RAM).
On tarmac = 8 FPS (compared to 20 with the new machine)

I just ran FlightGear on my PC (built with cygwin under Windows)
and got some numbers similar to yours (I was running at 800x600 window
size). That leads me to ask for some clarification, when I say
buildings, I mean this (http://homepage.mac.com/eq_fidget/mac_fgfs.jpg)
and not
