This has happened to me a couple of times too. Horrible!! Accidentally setting
off a 'find and replace' globally for something (usually changing a few letters
to a blank string), simply because the focus was accidentally on that dialog

Yes. I encountered this as well. Maybe once every two years.
If the Change All was executed only in the open files, then I
closed all files without saving. Then I continued with the last
saved version.
If the Change All was executed in a book also on files which
had not been opened before, I

Also, the default radio button on the Find/Change dialog box should be
Document, not Book. If you Change All in a document, you have a chance to
revert to saved, but Change All in a book will open, save, and close documents

looked into how to prevent it.
But, it is one of the reasons I copy the files + book into an archive folder
below the working folder before an editing session for any given document.

Our workaround has been to restore the document using the properties menu
on the file or folder from Windows Explorer. Although recent work may be
lost, repairing a huge, unwanted update is avoided. We usually have to

You are not alone. I use Resource Hacker to edit fmdlg.dll and remove the A
shortcut from the Change All button. The button is still there, but you have to
click on it, which is much less likely to happen by accident.
