Just to chime in and say that I have seen device timeout messages too
- the behaviour for me was (ok, maybe a bit random but...) having
mounted an NFS exported /usr/src and hammering it with a buildworld.

Just a small point - I am not sure if RELENG_5_4 exists yet, I think
that is only created after RELENG_5 is branched to create FreeBSD
5.4-RELEASE.
Try cvsup'ing to RELENG_5 maybe?

I was just wondering whether it is posibl to build say a 4.11 kernel
on a 5.3 system - I'd like to have only one machine here on which I
maintain all the sources and buidl what i need, then I think you can
mount the /usr/obj file system and /usr/src and run the install stages
