I'm not sure if its documented but this is how I do it:
(edit /etc/make.conf and /etc/src.conf if necessary)
make buildworld make
CC'ing Ken, Nathan, and Martin since they all have some insight to this

FreeBSD USB memstick image but with the latest RELENG_8 kernel/world.
