Very critical indeed... And with such a huge userbase that it took six
months before anybody noticed this problem. :-)

It is precisely because this file is so critical that it is not
updated unless it has actually changed.
In general the few files that have the schg flag set has it for good
reasons.

It is not *needed*. The schg flags is there to make sure that sysadmins
realize that /var/empty *really* is supposed to be empty.

To get a priority inversion like this one needs at least three tasks

That sounds weird.
To answer your question: No, there is no such way. The system does not keep
track of what was originally installed.
I would suggest using du to find out where in the file system the bloat
occurs.

Yes, and no. RELENG_4_3 is the branch for 4.3-Release plus security-fixes
but no new features. RELENG_4_3_0 doesn't exist. The tag for 4.3-Release
is RELENG_4_3_0_RELEASE. (And RELENG_4 gives 4-STABLE.)

The difference between -O and no optimization is usually significant
though if only because the code generated by gcc without any optimization
being done is fairly inefficient.

Note that if you change output line to the following it prints 2 1

In this case f(d) is guaranteed to be called before d is evaluated.
