On first use, it autmatically (through sane-backends) loads a firmware
file. After that, it reports, say revision 2.10
(I don't remember the exact numbers).

Yes - the work around is this: don't do that!
Do _not_ remove any mass storage device before unmounting it.
If you can't learn to live with this workaround, please do not use
removable mass storage devices with FreeBSD.

Further testing shows the following:
- VirtualBox shows the error if the host machine is running a 64-bit os
(FreeBSD, Xubuntu)
- if the host machine is running a 32-bit os (FreeBSD, Xubuntu) doesn't give
