For decent mkv and h264 playback you really do need mplayer pre8.
Earlier version support it but well it sucks, namely becuase most of
the h264 encodes are poorly done right now. The pre8 has a more
forgiven decoder I think so it works better.

i modified the freevo 154 default skin -- made a black/transparent
version with a new background image and some other small modifications.
imo it looks very good on an old crt tv-set and is an alternative to the
blue skins.

I was able upgrade mplayer by steeling binaries from my ubuntu pc (mplayer1.0pre7). Mplayer works fine on it's own and if I switch from the pre4 to pre7 binary while freevo is running I have no problems but if I leave /usr/bin/mplayer as pre7 freevo gives me this error for all videos: no action
