It seems my problem with 1.7.0 is bigger then I thought... since upgrading
from 1.6.3 I found it to be very unstable. When playing a playlist,
somehow, I do see cover images, but Freevo crashes when it tries to open
something with non-standard characters.
For instance, I have my music
I just tried creating a symlink, named test, poining to the Oôs Joôs
directory.
Freevo has no problems anymore playing the content of this symlinked
directory.
Though I still don't have a audio cover shown, and I get this error in the
main-500.log:

Ok, I changed line 288 like the item said, and it solved the crashes! :-D
This I'm very happy with!!
But, I still don't get any audio covers, while the are shown correctly when
played from playlists.

Somehow I don't think that this code about line 288, The file
I just have album covers named front.jpg or front.png in every album
directory.
This has always worked well, and stopped working in 1.7.0
I do not have files named after the songs, only the front.* files.
Note that this still works in playlists.

I know this is an old post, but the real answer to the problem in Arch
Linux is to edit /etc/locale.gen and uncomment the locale you are
using in your /etc/rc.conf
After you have saved locale.gen then, as root, issue locale-gen and
the locales will be created. Reboot and everything should be
