I'm using a 450Mhz P3 with ATI MACH64 AGP card. I'm working on playing
DVDs. I can now succesfully play DVDs using freevo/mplayer using the Xv
video driver coupled with MTRR support. mplayer dvd://1, etc plays my
dvd just ducky averaging between 50-60% CPU load on my little P3. I can
also play
files in IMAGES just find. Can
anyone explain why I must manually mount the DVD drive first
but not the CDROM drive?

I had the same problem. I ended up rebinding the mplayer
keys using the mplayer input.conf file to match the freevo
bindings. This ways, the keys always work the same regardless
of whether or not a video is playing.

I found my problem. I had used the example for MAME from freevo_conf.py.
The example has a -fullscreen option. I've learned this is not a valid option
for xmame. I instead needed to use -x11 3 for fullscreen.

I'm recording ATSC streams using a pcHDTV HD5500 card. The script I use
for recording is at the bottom of this thread. This card dumps out
MPEG2 transport streams.

This card has a DVI out. I drive my Sharp 42 1080p monitor using a DVI to
HDMI cable.
It took me a while to get the correct X configuration to work, but I found the
proper one for 1080p.
I'm using the NVIDIA binary driver from NVIDIA.

For my Sharp Aquos 42 LCD monitor, the key thing I needed was NoMaxPClkCheck.
You mileage may vary :-)
The NVIDIA binary drivers have a very detailed explaination of the Xorg setup.

With fc8 comes xine-lib 1.2 and xine ui 0.99.5.
I found that I couldn't play mpegs until I changed my xine -V from xxmc
