upgraded autotools

I have just upgraded the autotools setup to autoconf-2.53 and automake-1.8. This means you can no longer build the CVS sources with older versions. I hope this does not cause a lot of problems with the feature and library checks, but I'd be grateful if everybody tries the new system and reports
