I recently upgraded to Panther (10.3.2), and it's very nice. I'm
impressed with how much faster my Lombard seems. Only one problem: When I
run the Disk Utility to repair permissions, it runs for about a minute,
then hangs. The screen becomes dimmer, then dimmer still. I don't get the

I've had it happen on a couple of PowerBooks. It's caused by the
battery contacts momentarily breaking contact. The computer looses
power so briefly that it doesn't go into power down but it does
completely interrupt the processor. The only way out is to restart.
I suspected this too,
I did an extensive check of prices about 5 months ago, and got mine from
Batteries.com. Very satisfied. On a related thread, I saw something on
another list about being able to replace the cells in a Pismo battery.
Anyone know from whom you'd buy the cells, and what the process is?

Is it possible for a li-on battery for a Lombard (M7318) to be
completely and forever dead? I've tried battery reset and get a box that
tells me it's reset and to charge it, but the computer is not seeing it,
before or after the reset.
If it is forever dead, can it be rebuilt?
Thanks

Just so we don't start another myth: the saying predates Jimmy Hoffa by
many years (if not centuries). It's one of those proverbs that
everyone would love to have invented. (I'm just surprised it's not been
attributed to Churchill yet!). It's been made famous in modern times by

What happens in these situations? Nothing? A warning/dialog box?
My first thought is to check/repair permissions.

How much RAM do you have installed? If you have 2x256=512, I'd suggest
removing 256 and trying to repair permissions again. I've found that
my Lombard will not tolerate 512 MB with Panther. Jaguar didn't mind
it, but Panther will eventually crash every time I install the second
256 MB chip.

Plea for ideas on what I am missing in getting an external USB drive

I upgraded the hard drive in my G3 Firewire (Pismo) 400 MHz 320MB RAM

thought the smart thing to do would be to get a USB drive enclose

Another possible solution is to use MacLink Plus Deluxe to access the file. You can
set the software up to translate the file from one version to another. It can also be
used to identify the existing file's author and version. Finally, it can be used to
open the file in a fashion similar to

Andrew,
Yes, the TV will serve as a monitor if attached using an S-Video out
cable (they were supplied with the Wallstreets and maybe your TiBook
one is the same - a very short little cable of 2 or 3 inches going from
S-Video out to cinch connector?) The clarity is pretty yuck if I
