OS X (10.3.7) works both from several discs and several CDs. But no known
Bootable OS 9 CDs, like repair CDs or OS 9 installation CDs work. Same
discs boot other similar machines.
All I get is the dreadful grey screen.

boot from on this machine. There has been quite a few different versions of
the installation CDs for OS 9 along with a few updates. What you need to
make sure you have is the full install retail CD,
I was wondering if you had access to an external CD drive you could
plug into the G4. I once had a similar issue with an unrelated machine
years ago and I couldn't boot the OS disk from the Mac's internal
drive. I resorted to using an external drive which seemed to work fine.
Just a thought.
