When I tried to go online for a rail race it came back with check firewall
settings unable to connect.
At the moment I'm using windows firewall but is it now time to switch to
kereo and forget windows?

it isn't your firewall. I use Windows firewall on XP and Vista and RR
works fine with default configurations. It is more likely the RR surver
is down.

The server was down yesterday as I was doing some maintenance stuff and
apparently it did not come back up properly.
It is up now however, and all should be well.
