XMMS is unmaintained upstream, relies on gtk1, and has a ton of bugs (it's at -r16 if that means anything to you). It's not really worth maintaining in Gentoo. If you really like XMMS that much, one might want to try something like BMPx, which is very similar, and much more maintained upstream.
