with Python 2.6.2 I have (even re-)installed dev-python/pygtk.
And indeed, there is a directory
/usr/lib/python2.6/site-packages/gtk-2.0
But, still,
import gtk
fails. Looking closer,
there is NO pygtk.pth-2.0 pygtk.py-2.0 file
in /usr/lib/python2.6/site-packages
as it is on a working
