You need to look into /lib/rc/sh/init.sh, the mount_svcdir() function:
/lib/rc/sh/init.sh: mount -n -t

I think it takes care of itself. I don't have the line in fstab either

Same here. Never put it in fstab, but it automagically gets mounted.
Just like the rootfs thingy.
