I found out (using the source inserting log statements :-) that my
peculiar format of
make.conf was the culprit.
For reasons too silly to explain here :-) I built up my USE variable in
more than one line:
USE=some flags
USE=$USE more flags
(basically to make a use flag comparison

update-eix won't work anymore: If I try to start it, it prints Reading
Portage settings .. and starts gobbling up memory at an amazing rate.
At a memory usage of about 770MB (according to top) the process stops
with the message Aborted (nothing else).
What now?
