If you just want to view instant output rate without recording it
there is a simple text program called nload. You can also use iftop if
you want to view the rate of each connections.

If you read the docs, you'll probably see you need to connect to the
machine from a web browser on a specific port.
BTW, if you need to graph bandwidth, I highly recommend cacti.
