I was wrong in not separating the C# language compiler from the .NET environment. Mono consists of both. At one time MS planned a bunch of languages for the .NET environment that could inter-operate at the byte code level. [gentoo-user] {OT} Shorewall config check
Hello, I set up shorewall on my Gentoo firewall/router for the first time yesterday. I had been using the iptables commands specified in the Gentoo Home Router Guide before. I used this: http://www.shorewall.net/two-interface.htm and ran into some trouble as the two-interface example files installed with the package didn't match the ones described in the above document. I ended up with the following and I was hoping someone could have a quick look and tell me if it's secure enough and not overly redundant. Wireless ath0 is on the local subnet. eth0 is attached to a DSL modem which (unfortunately) also happens to be a router with IP address 192.168.1.1. I configured that modem/router to do static NAT and forward all ports to the Gentoo firewall/router and I disabled everything on it I could (DNS, DHCP, etc.). The Gentoo firewall/router provides DNS via dnsmasq and all the machines on the network configure IPs manually so there is no DHCP anywhere. /etc/shorewall/zones: fw firewall net ipv4 loc ipv4 /etc/shorewall/interfaces: # I removed norfc1918 from the net OPTIONS because eth0 # has IP 192.168.1.2 from the modem/router. [gentoo-user] jffnms overlay installation
Hello, Jffnms is a very cool network management package, albeit a little complex to install and configure. Thanks to 'angusyoung' installation is now a breeze. I thought I'd post what I did to get it to install, in explicit form, in case anyone else wanted to check out this excellent 'network management system'. I've been reading and working on installing jffnms, an experimental new package not yet in the portage tree. Here are the documents I have been using as a guide for this installation: http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Installing_3rd_Party_ Ebuilds#ebuild:_A_Safer_Approach http://gentoo-wiki.com/Portage_Overlay_Listing#Gentoo_PHP_Overlay http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=92501 Here's what I did in a synopsis: vi /etc/make.conf: PORTDIR_OVERLAY=/usr/local/portage PORTDIR_OVERLAY=${PORTDIR_OVERLAY} /usr/local/portage/net-analyzer/jffnms/ vi /etc/portage/package.keywords net-analyzer/jffnms ~x86 vi /etc/portage/package.use net-analyzer/jffnms snmp vi /etc/portage/package.unmask # =net-analyzer/jffnms-0.8.2 mkdir /usr/local/portage/net-analyzer/jffnms cd /usr/local/portage/net-analyzer/jffnms copy latest ebuild from buzilla (92501) to file named: jffnms-0.8.2.ebuild ebuild jffnms-0.8.2.ebuild digest create Manifest and the files dir emerge jffnms now it's installed: net-analyzer/jffnms Latest version available: 0.8.2 Latest version installed: 0.8.2 Size of downloaded files: 544 kB Questions: Did I miss anything? Is anything in the above synopsis incorrect or not necessary? Anyone else want to try installing jffnms so as to test it on Gentoo? On to configuring this beast! http://dev.gentoo.org/~angusyoung/docs/jffnms James -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list

The other reason is, that independent from which net.*-scripts areattached to a runlevel, at least one net.*-script besides net.lo becomesstarted according to RC_NET_STRICT_CHECKING=no [1] in /etc/conf.d/rc. Such behaviour shouldn't be the default. If I want a distro whereanything happens automatically, I would use Ubunto or Suse. I saw this simple test on the hplip debugging website: Determine the IP address of your printer by printing out the network configuration page (or if you know it or can determine it in another way) Run: $ hp-makeuri ip-address For example: $ hp-makeuri 192.168.1.1 This will result in a device URI printed to the console. Sorry. If anything fails, I might be able to install it from cpan or so. Is there anything special to consider when doing this on Gentoo?
[gentoo-user] Getting NX to work - account locked?
Hello! I installed net-misc/nx-x11-1.5.0-r5 net-misc/nxclient-1.5.0-r2 net-misc/nxcomp-1.5.0-r1 net-misc/nxproxy-1.5.0 net-misc/nxserver-freenx-0.5.0 net-misc/nxssh-1.5.0 according to the http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_FreeNX_Server I also followed the step on the discussions page at http://gentoo-wiki.com/Talk:HOWTO_FreeNX_Server#howto_install On my client, I imported the key. Now I try to login and it fails. In the client window, I get: NX 203 NXSSH running with pid: 28649 NX 285 Enabling check on switch command NX 285 Enabling skip of SSH config files NX 200 Connected to address: 213.133.109.44 on port: 631 NX 202 Authenticating user: nx NX 208 Using auth method: publickey NX 204 Authentication failed. In the logs on the server, I get: Apr 12 19:46:41 hetzner ssh[1892]: User nx not allowed because account is locked Apr 12 19:46:41 hetzner ssh[1892]: Failed none for invalid user nx from 88.130.83.47 port 41243 ssh2 Do I need to unlock the account? For example, if someone had net-wireless/madwifi-tools installed, well that is now net-wireless/madwifi-ng-tools in portage. So portage needs to update the installed package database in /var/pkg/db to reflect the new name, so the user continues to receive updates for it. See 5.f at: http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/devrel/handbook/handbook.xml?part=2chap=5#doc_chap6 update? Is 2Q-2006 supposed to have anything to do with emerge -u portage? It doesn't look like it. But then what is it for? What you really should have seen was a message that said Applying 2Q-2006 updates or some such. Not a go look at this file message. -Richard Thanks Richard, good link. I didn't mean to imply that I was advised to read that file. I mentioned it because I didn't recognize it from the last time I sync'ed portage. But your reply leads to other questions: IIRC portage didn't say applying updates, it just mentioned the file at the end of the sync. Don't I have to run update to actually apply the updates? And, how do I prevent some updates and allow others. I have bandwidth issues;( -Maxim -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list __ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo!
