I had a problem with Amarok not finding a decoder for mp3s when xine-lib wasn't compiled to decode mp3s. Is there a use flag I need to do this? Well, I was lazy so I just enabled 'mad', which allowed xine to play mp3s for me. However, to get amarok to play mp3s I still had to re-emerge
